Severe burn injuries provide researchers with an opportunity to study the effects of painful but usually transient trauma on psychological functioning. To that end, this article presents a review of the 3 main areas of this body of literature: (a) premorbid characteristics of people who sustain severe burn injuries, (b) psychological reactions during hospitalization, and (c) long-term adjustment. The general implications of these studies are discussed and then used to illuminate the circumstances under which individuals suffer the most from this type of trauma, the effects of such injuries on personality function, and how meaningful units of measurements can be defined. Potential clinical applications are also described.

This study reports on the first phase of a 3-phase project to determine student acceptance of microform, and on the effectiveness of microform for learning. Included in this report are a description of the problem to be investigated, the methods and activities involved in establishing the project office and selecting staff, and the progress of the project to date. At this time, microform materials will be used in conjunction with the following courses: art appreciation, Black studies, college algebra, economics, freshman composition, life science, nursing, political science, basic psychology, and beginning college Spanish. Bibliographies for these courses have been prepared (included as appendices to the report) and will be microformed to provide most of the necessary course material. In concluding the Phase I report, the principal investigator observes that completion of the full study could have a meaningful effect on patterns of information storage and retrieval, and on the field of educational resources in general. -(Phase II will involve the conduct of a pilot study using developed materials, and Phase III will involve the conduct of a full field study and evaluation of the results.) A Research Project to Determine the Student Acceptability and Learning Effectiveness of Microform Collections in Community Colleges: Phase I, Final Report.

This articles describes the behavioral responses of adult family members to critical illness and how these responses change over the course of the hospitalization. A convenience sample of 52 family members of patients in intensive units completed the Iowa ICU Family Scale, a self-report tool measuring sleep, eating, activity, family role, and support behaviors. Scales were completed by family members each day during the first week and then weekly throughout the patient's ICU stay. Family members reported sleeping less with a poorer quality of sleep, less nutritional intake, an increased use of cigarettes, alcohol, and over-the-counter and prescription medications, and spending more time talking, visiting the patient, and waiting. Stress was highest at the time of the ICU admission, began to plateau at Day 6, and then dropped considerably by Day 28. These findings suggest that crisis intervention is important during the early phase of caring for critically ill patients and their family members.
