The design of computer systems capable of understanding and effectively meeting human needs is of great importance to our economy and well-being. It is generally agreed by those who have studied design that we can greatly improve the ultimate systems by improving the way we go about designing them. Researchers and practitioners in a variety of fields have been involved in this effort. The concept of design rationale, the why of designing, has emerged as a key to making design processes more intelligible and easier to deal with. Design rationale refers broadly to issues in the methods, documentation, and communication of design thinking. This book offers the most comprehensive account to date on research into design rationale. The authors report on leading-edge theory and empirical studies of the nature and use of design rationale. They also describe the significance of design rationale for creating design tools and for teaching designers. Finally, they discuss the nature of system design and the use of design rationale in real design settings in industry.read more

Toward a Theory of Knowledge Reuse: Types of Knowledge Reuse Situations and Factors in Reuse Success
TL;DR: Synthesis of evidence from a wide variety of sources suggests four distinct types ofknowledge reuse situations according to the knowledge reuser and the purpose of knowledge reuse, which involve shared work producers, who produce knowledge they later reuse; shared work practitioners, who reuse each other's knowledge contributions; expertise-seeking novices; and secondary knowledge miners.

Scenario-based design
Mary Beth Rosson,John M. Carroll +1 more
TL;DR: Open up the design process to the intended users and descriptions of their projected use entail many technical issues and people need to be able to assess design alternatives with use-oriented criteria and to integrate and coordinate such assessments with those that they make on traditional grounds.

Maintaining mental models: a study of developer work habits
TL;DR: It is found that many problems arose because developers were forced to invest great effort recovering implicit knowledge by exploring code and interrupting teammates and this knowledge was only saved in their memory.

The anatomy of prototypes: Prototypes as filters, prototypes as manifestations of design ideas
TL;DR: An anatomy of prototypes is proposed as a framework for prototype conceptualization that views prototypes not only in their role in evaluation but also in their generative role in enabling designers to reflect on their design activities in exploring a design space.

Transcending the individual human mind—creating shared understanding through collaborative design
TL;DR: Challenges are identified that are seen as the limiting factors for future collaborative human-computer systems and the Envisionment and Discovery Collaboratory is introduced as an integrated physical, and computational environment addressing some of these challenges.
