A New Spin on Small-Scale Combustor Geometry

TL;DR: In this paper, the combustion and space saving benefits of the highly centrifugally loaded combustion of the UCC in a new combustor orientation that places the combustor axially upstream of the turbine versus radially outboard were investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sweeping Jets Issuing From the Face of a Backward-Facing Step

TL;DR: In this article, the performance and fluid disbursal capabilities of several fluidic oscillator variations injecting from the face of a backward-facing step were evaluated with and without coflow and at varying coflow velocities.
Journal ArticleDOI

Analysis of an Additively Manufactured Cooled Ultra Compact Combustor Vane

TL;DR: In this article, a hybrid guide vane was designed and modified with internal supports to make additive manufacturing of the vanes possible, and the experimental results validated the computational analysis and demonstrated through pressure and temperature measurements that the cooled vane had a reduced surface temperature compared to the uncooled vane and that pressure distributions supported coolant flow through film-cooling holes.

Ultra-Compact Combustors for Advanced Gas Turbine Engines

TL;DR: In this article, a gas turbine engine has been proposed that uses a near-constant temperature (NCT) cycle and an Inter-Turbine Burner (ITB) to provide large amounts of power extraction from the low-pressure turbine.

Selected challenges in jet and rocket engine combustion research

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review several worthy challenges related to combustion in liquid-fueled turbojet and ramjet engines or in liquidpropellant rocket engines. But their priority for selection here is based upon their potential for causing a quantum leap in technology and upon the authors' personal experience with the subjects.
Journal ArticleDOI

Analysis of Flow Migration in an Ultra-Compact Combustor

TL;DR: In this article, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis is presented for the flow patterns in the combustor section of a representative fighter-scale UCC engine, including secondary flows, cavity flow characteristics, shear layer interactions and mixing properties.
