TLDR
In this article, an optical planimeter is described in which the light beam from a small source is collimated and subsequently focused on a photocell, and it is shown that the area of even a thin leaf placed in the collimated part of the beam is measured accurately without the need for a correction for transmitted light.
Abstract
SUMMARY An optical planimeter is described in which the light beam from a small source is collimated and subsequently focused on a photocell. It is shown that the area of even a thin leaf placed in the collimated part of the beam is measured accurately without the need for a correction for transmitted light. The instrument features linear response, digital read-out, high speed, good stability, five ranges of 50 up to 1000 cm2, and an accuracy of 1% of the range.

TL;DR: A glasshouse experiment to evaluate the application of growth analysis of dry weight and of four other variables to ecological problems, such as niche differentiation of co-existing species finds species that differ in productivity and in life cycle strategy can have a similar niche during the first year of growth.

Effect of drought during different stages in the life-cycle on the growth and biomass allocation of two Aira species.

TL;DR: The two species have different mechanisms for maintaining their existence in the same habitat, and A. caryophyllea seems better adapted to reproduction in a habitat with a restricted growing season, while the continued vegetative growth in the reproductive phase of A. praecox increases its survival during drought.

Responses of Lens esculenta Moench to controlled environmental factors

TL;DR: Many experiments were undertaken to study the responses of the lentil cultivars 'Large blonde' and 'Anicia' to controlled environmental factors, bringing out treatment-dependent differences in leaf area, stem elongation, dry matter production and evapotranspiratio.

Use of an Optical Planimeter for Measuring Leaf Area.

TL;DR: The laboratory methods employed in such measurements are reviewed, an instrument which he designed for the purpose is described, and any variation in leaf color or texture due to difference in species, weather, maturity, or time lag between picking and measurement would cause appreciable error.

The accuracy of the rating method for determining leaf area

TL;DR: It is shown that errors may arise from peculiarities in the standard pictures and the standards increased in size logarithmically but further work is necessary to see if this is the best arrangement.
