Evidential problems in social program evaluation and their analogs from engineering and the physical sciences, medicine, and an assortment of other disciplines

Indonesia is a disaster-prone country and has a large population, as evidenced by the increasing number of disasters almost every year. In Aceh province, the second earthquake occurred on 7 December 2016 Wednesday, in the area of Pidie Jaya Regency. This earthquake has caused many deaths and injuries, and damage to buildings. The victims died and were injured mainly due to collapsed residential buildings and other damaged public buildings. The methodology used in this research is by observing and measuring both quantitative and qualitative in the field and then analyzed based on the components of government regulations. The first qualitative measurement uses a map digitization checklist prepared, then the field survey to take pictures and quantitative inspection based on the type of building, building level, and building construction elements. Finally, analyzing the data uses the building regulation component of the government. The results showed that the earthquake that occurred resulted in almost all buildings with modern structures suffered minor damage. The rest sustained small loss and severe damage (collapsing). All buildings with modern structures consist mostly of structural elements/materials that are not under government regulations. This study also found that there are still residential buildings with traditional structures not damaged by the earthquake. This finding is expected to provide public awareness that constructing settlements with modern structures must use structural elements and components under building regulations from the government.

Rapid Assessment of Buildings Affected by Earthquake: Case Study in Pidie Jaya, Aceh, Indonesia

The seismic design of buildings in Colombia is governed by the Colombian Earthquake Resistant Construction Regulations (NSR-10), which allow the use of several analysis methodologies focused on the determination of dynamic action in buildings to design their seismic resistance system. One of the most used methodologies nowadays is the equivalent horizontal force method (EHF). Its application is a complicated process; therefore this article presents a Java-based software developed at Universidad de La Salle, which aims to enhance the execution of EHF calculations, minimizing the user intervention to only define the project’s basic parameters. The software is made of three modules: the first module allows the user to calculate acceleration, speed, movement, damage threshold or limited safety spectrums, separating the areas with seismic microzoning. With the second module, the user can calculate seismic forces for each one of the structure’s levels. In the third module, the user can calculate the dynamic period using Rayleigh’s method, adjust said period, and finally, adjust the dynamic shear obtained through the modal spectral analysis or any other dynamic analysis method. The final product of the application is a set of .txt files containing the spectra generated in order to be included in structural design programs when performing modal spectral analysis; a report with data provided by the user and the calculations made by the program in PDF format, which can be included in the calculation protocols.

: The function of the slab system in a building is mainly to carry the gravity load. There are different types of slab systems which will be selected based on gravity loading, length of loading span and requirement of the architecture. The structural engineers mainly concentrate on vertical loads while designing the slab system, even though slab systems provide a significant amount of lateral stiffness to the structures to resist the lateral loads. In some designs, the lateral stiffness of the slab system is taken into account while others do not. In this study, the influence of slab systems in the transfer of the lateral load to the lateral load resistance system is assessed. The target building type is a wall-frame system. To find out the influence of the slab system on the lateral stiffness of the wall-frame system, rectangular shape regular type buildings with different stories (5, 10 and 15 stories) are selected. Here, three different types of slab systems, such as slab and beam, flat slab and flat slab with drop panel, are selected. Next, the effect of structural response is investigated for the structures under seismic and wind forces, with and without lateral slab stiffness. In this study, the response (displacement, inter-storey drift, frequency and base shear distribution) obtained through modal response spectrum analysis, non-linear time history analysis and static wind analysis are used for comparison. From the responses, it is clear that the lateral stiffness of the slab system has a significant influence on the serviceability limit state design of a structure, but not to the ultimate limit state design. Considering the lateral stiffness of slab, the deformation of a structure is controlled by (5-15) %, (15-35) % and (30-55) % for SB, FS and FSDP, respectively, based on the structural height.
