We describe functionality for determining an object database management system's suitability for developing multimedia applications. We discuss all levels of hardware and software support, as even the most ideal database software cannot operate independent of operating systems, networks, and hardware. A review of the multimedia support provided by current commercial and research object database management systems is also included.

We describe the design of an object-oriented multimedia database management system that can store and manage SGML/HyTime compliant multimedia documents. The system is capable of storing, within one database, different types o f documents by accommodating multiple document type definitions (DTDs). This is accomplished by dynamically creating object types according to element definitions in each DTD. The system also has tools to automatically insert markedup documents into the database. We discuss the system architecture, design issues and the system features.

An object-oriented SGML/HyTime compliant multimedia database management system

The traditional approach to software engineering is based on the waterfall model or some variation of this model. It is well known, however, that this approach is not particularly well suited to the production of one-of-a-kind or experimental systems due to fuzzy user requirements-users are not sure what can be accomplished. Since most multimedia applications are currently of this type, we must search for alternative approaches. One such alternative is based on rapid prototyping in which we quickly generate a working system that we use to validate user requirements. For distributed multimedia applications, we have experimented with a prototyping environment based on grammar formalisms and utilizing Web technologies such as HTML/XML to generate a working prototype. Such an approach seems to be promising and we are currently pursuing this line of research. For the future, researchers working at the interface of software engineering and multimedia systems may identify high-level abstractions common to such applications which will permit the traditional approach to software engineering, backed up with appropriate CASE tools, to be used.

The evolving role of software engineering in the production of multimedia applications

Noch vor nicht allzu langer Zeit hatten Datenbanksysteme (DBS) hauptsachlich einfache Datentypen, wie z.B. Integer und Strings, zu verwalten. Um mit solchen Typen umgehen und sie reprasentieren zu konnen, waren einfache Datenstrukturen vollig ausreichend. Mit dem technischen und konzeptuellen Fortschritt beim Handling multimedialer Daten in den letzten Jahren sind auch die Anforderungen an DBS gestiegen; diese mussen nun in der Lage sein, fur die komplexeren multimedialen Datentypen eine geeignete Umgebung bereitzustellen. Multimediale Informationssysteme kombinieren verschiedene Typen von Informationsquellen mit einer grosen Menge von komplexen Applikationen. Dieses Gebiet gilt momentan als heises Forschungsthema in der Informatik und Informationswissenschaft.
