The Use of Clay as an Engineered Barrier in Radioactive-Waste Management a Review

TL;DR: Bentonite and bentonite/sand mixtures are selected primarily because of their low hydraulic permeability in a saturated state, which ensures that diffusion will be the dominant transport mechanism in the barrier as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effects of technological voids on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of compacted bentonite-sand mixture

TL;DR: In this paper, a mixture of MX80 bentonite and sand was characterized in the laboratory in terms of water retention property, swelling pressure, compressibility and hydraulic conductivity, and the effects of the technological voids or the voids inside the soil were investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hydraulic conductivity and microstructure changes of compacted bentonite/sand mixture during hydration

TL;DR: In this article, the unsaturated hydraulic properties of MX80 bentonite/sand mixture were characterized by carrying out a series of experiments including water retention test, infiltration test as well as microstructure observation.

Evaluation of the impact of pore fluid chemistry on the hydromechanical behaviour of clay-based sealing materials

TL;DR: The results of an experimental program undertaken to evaluate the impact of pore fluid salinity on the hydromechanical performance of light and dense backfill materials are presented in this article.

Prediction of swelling pressures of different types of bentonite in dilute solutions

TL;DR: In this paper, a mechanistic model was developed to predict the swelling pressure of fully saturated, bentonite-based materials in distilled water or dilute saline solutions over a large range of final dry densiti...

A framework for the behaviour of unsaturated expansive clays

TL;DR: In this paper, a framework for describing the mechanical behavior of unsaturated expansive clays is presented, which is an extension of an existing formulation developed for unsaturated soils of low activity.

The relationship between suction and swelling properties in a heavily compacted unsaturated clay

TL;DR: In this article, the water retention and swelling properties of the FoCa7 clay under controlled suction and zero applied stress were examined. But the results of the experiments were limited to the case of very high suction.

Influence of temperature on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of a compacted bentonite

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of temperature (between 20 and 80 °C) on some hydro-mechanical properties of a compacted bentonite has been investigated, showing that the water retention capacity at higher temperature, both in confined and unconfined conditions, is lower.

Experimental study on swelling characteristics of compacted bentonite

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effect of bentonites as back-filling materials for repositories of high-level nuclear waste in the context of nuclear backfilling.

Q1. What contributions have the authors mentioned in the paper "Experimental study on the swelling behaviour of bentonite/claystone mixture" ?

Tang et al. this paper investigated the behavior of a bentonite-claystone mixture in a deep geological repository for high-level radioactive waste and found that the swelling pressure determined in laboratory can be affected by the experimental methods.
