The Life-Course Dynamics of Goal Pursuit and Goal Adjustment: A Two-Process Framework

This chapter focuses on the economic activities and interactions of Hellenistic world, and the role of the kings in creating the parameters of society. It describes regional diversities and the transformation of the polis as a focus of social life. The most basic demographic facts are unknown, for no reliable picture can be drawn of population figures in most areas, or of changes in them. Piracy provide a specific example of how the phrase Hellenistic Society is a convenient but misleading label for a set of developing and ad hoc solutions to the very various immediate or longer-term needs and problems which had to be solved within certain boundary conditions by governments and individuals. The royal land policy impinges directly on the greatest cultural phenomenon of the Hellenistic world, the transformation and revitalization of the Greek polis in areas where it was long established, together with its relentless spread into area after area of erstwhile non-Greek lands.

Publisher Summary This examines the philosophical roots of psychological theories on wisdom, and discusses recent developments in theorizing on wisdom. Attention is paid to the development and age-related differences, culture, and the stimulation of wisdom. The Berlin wisdom paradigm has consolidated its prominent place in wisdom research and theorizing. The balance theory of wisdom is elaborated in which wisdom is placed in a broader framework of intelligence, an educational program based on this theory is on its way, but the theory still lacks empirical support. With respect to the concept itself, some extensions have taken place. The concept now has an explicit moral loading. There might be a danger in introducing elements such as value and virtue in the description of wisdom, which are hard to assess. Moreover, the wise person may become a politically correct new saint. The balance theory defines wisdom as high level practical intelligence, and recent investigations in research of the Berlin wisdom paradigm focus on the relationship between selective optimization with compensation and wisdom.

Wisdom and Aging.

The following paper consists of two parts. In the first it is argued that Bruno de Finetti’s theory of subjective probability provides a partial resolution of Hume’s problem of induction, if that problem is cast in a certain way. De Finetti’s solution depends in a crucial way, however, on a symmetry assumption — exchangeability — and in the second half of the paper the broader question of the use of symmetry arguments in probability is analyzed. The problems and difficulties that can arise are explicated through historical examples which illustrate how symmetry arguments have played a important role in probability theory throughout its development. In a concluding section the proper role of such arguments is discussed.
