TL;DR: The results of an experimental advanced English writing course developed for Japanese students at International Christian University suggest that the students' improvement in controlling the discourse structures of the expository essay transfer to their ability to write more grammatical sentences even though the program does not focus on developing grammatical skill as discussed by the authors.
