Abstract
In this paper a new system for increasing CNC machining productivity is described. The system is based on registering the moment when the cutting tool touches the workpiece during a machining operation. The cutting tool approaches the workpiece with rapid traverse and switches to work feed when it comes in contact with it. In this way, the time for ‘cutting air’ can significantly be reduced.

Machining precision augmented by sensors

TL;DR: In this article, two types of on-machine measurements are conducted between successive cutting passes, one providing a reference position of the tool-tip using diffraction measurements, and the second measurement type is by the tooltip acting as a probe of a 'fine touch' contact sensor that is under proximity control while approaching the part.
