Abstract
In this paper, we address several puzzles concerning speech acts, particularly indirect speech acts. We show how a formal semantictheory of discourse interpretation can be used to define speech actsand to avoid murky issues concerning the metaphysics of action. Weprovide a formally precise definition of indirect speech acts, includingthe subclass of so-called conventionalized indirect speech acts. Thisanalysis draws heavily on parallels between phenomena at the speechact level and the lexical level. First, we argue that, just as co-predicationshows that some words can behave linguistically as if they're `simultaneously'of incompatible semantic types, certain speech acts behave this way too.Secondly, as Horn and Bayer (1984) and others have suggested, both thelexicon and speech acts are subject to a principle of blocking or ``preemptionby synonymy'': Conventionalized indirect speech acts can block their`paraphrases' from being interpreted as indirect speech acts, even ifthis interpretation is calculable from Gricean-style principles. Weprovide a formal model of this blocking, and compare it withexisting accounts of lexical blocking.

A Lexical-Constructional Model Account of Illocution

TL;DR: The description of lexical templates for speech act predicates on the basis of Pustejovsky’s (1995) notion of qualia structure is enriched, showing that such descriptions allow the analyst to account for the constraining factors on the syntactic behavior of speech act Predicates in terms of lexicals-constructional integration at the argument structure level.

Situational Variations in Request and Apology Realization Strategies among International Postgraduate Students at Malaysian Universities

TL;DR: The authors examined the effects of the situational factors of social distance, power, and imposition on the students' choice of request and apology strategies as well as the modifications in requests and found that the participants made use of IFID strategy for apologies and conventionally indirect expressions for requests more frequently than other strategies.

Inferential Practices in Social Interaction: A Conversation-Analytic Account

TL;DR: The authors argue that meaning in interaction relies on inferences to a high degree and that participants treat each other as cognitive agents who imply and infer meanings, which are often consequential for interactional progression.
