Abstract
This paper deals with an assembly job shop scheduling problem considering two phases of control: order review/release (ORR) and dispatching rules. Dispatching rules have been intensively used in earlier job shop research. Such rules determine the processing sequence of jobs waiting in the queues of corresponding machines. In recent years, ORR emerges as another option for job shop control and has received increasing attention. Such control determines when to release jobs to the shop floor. Different ORR mechanisms have been devised and are reported to bring several advantages such as reduced inventory cost of early finished orders, controlled and balanced shop load levels and shorter order flow time. Previous studies on ORR often assume a simplified job shop without assembly operations, while this research applies ORR to an assembly job shop. The aim of this research is to evaluate the ability of different combinations of ORR-dispatching rules in optimising due date and flow time related performance measu...

Cost-Time Profile Simulation for Job Shop Scheduling Decisions

TL;DR: In this article, the impact of job shop scheduling on value stream optimization and decreasing of cost-time investment is investigated, where the authors used Lekin scheduling system for constructing the schedules based on four different dispatching rules and Cost-Time Profiler software for simulating the effect of different schedules on total production cost and cost time investment (representing the time value of money).

Optimal scheduling of a repair shipyard based on Supervisory Control Theory

TL;DR: The feasibility of applying SCT to production planning and logistics modeling is investigated through a method for synthesizing schedules via an innovative approach to resource modeling; through the incremental synthesis of production routines and deadlines; and through a bisection method for minimizing total production time and job-specific lead times.

Heuristics for production scheduling problem with machining and assembly operations

TL;DR: Two heuristics NEH_BB and Disjunctive are proposed to solve assembly flow shop scheduling problem where every part may not be processed on each machine and are claimed to be the better among available approaches for finding solution inassembly flow shop problems.

Minimizing the average deviation of job completion times about a common due date

TL;DR: In this article, a single-machine scheduling problem in which penalities occur when a job is completed early or late is considered, where the objective is to minimize the total penalty subject to restrictive assumptions on the due dates and penalty functions.

Theory and practice of load-oriented manufacturing control

TL;DR: Load-oriented manufacturing control is a new solution for job shops and its successful implementation in a plastic leaves factory as mentioned in this paper, where the idea is to limit and balance work-in-process inventory on a level as low as possible in order to accomplish a high workcentre utilization as well as a rapid and in-time flow of orders.

Order review/release: research issues and perspectives

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the ORR function and its impact on the operation of the shop floor and found that ORR does not always reduce the total time spent in the system.
