Abstract
In laboratory automation systems the user interface is that part of the software/hardware systems that provides for communication with the user. A new software approach is reported, consisting of a flexible interpreter combined with FORTRAN coded application modules. The interpreter (BACO) is built on a tagged data structure, comprising user variables, program lines as well as part of the language definition. A language dialect may be defined, tailored to the requirements of the application at hand. The structure of the system is described and an example of its application is given.

An easily extendable interpreter comprising MCA and CAMAC commands

TL;DR: A BASIC-like command interpreter BACO has been developed, which runs on PDP-11 computers with the RSX-11M operating system and is intended for moderately fast data transfer and interrupt handling.

Method of controlling a line computer for implementing a relocated compiled library program.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a method of controlling a line computer for implementing a relocated compiled library program (C library) with an interpreter type language program (BASIC interpreter BSI) to control the line computer.

A data acquisition system with mass storage

TL;DR: In this paper, a data handling system consisting of a small computer with disk storage and magnetic tape has been developed for various kinds of nuclear spectroscopy experiments, where the operator can specify the data structure and parameters of the experiment in a suitable code to the computer.

Computer Automation in Chemistry

TL;DR: The digital computer is a common instrument in many laboratories; it is no longer necessary to describe its operating characteristics in detail but some of the more pressing issues to be understood and resolved are opti-minal trade-offs between hardware and software.
