The phenomenon of intermedial conceptual loans is central to our understanding of the time-based arts. This thesis focuses on the usage of the term storytelling with regard to jazz improvisation. The aim of the investigation is to clarify how this concept is used by Swedish jazz practitioners. The framework of the study includes theories of narrativity and of metaphor as well as educational and sociological perspectives. The study aims at an exploration of a multivariety of perspectives. Accordingly, the analysis of the empirical study – which consists of qualitative interviews with fifteen jazz musicians – as well as of relevant previous writings is carried out by means of a broad inclusionist hermeneutic approach. Throughout the multitude of issues thus explored, qualities of openness, wholeness, and listening stand out as crucial to jazz improvisation and to musicians' understanding of it as 'storytelling'. The quality of temporality permeates any improvisational activity; the results of the study are structured in accordance with this perspective. The study points to several implications of the usage of the concept storytelling regarding jazz improvisation. From a theoretical point of view, the results exemplify the bidirectional function and relevance of rich intermedial metaphoricity on a conceptual level. Artistic implications of the usage of 'storytelling' in jazz contexts include the dynamics between structural and communicative aspects of the music, as well as the dynamics of different kinds of authenticity: on one hand, authenticity regarding the tradition in which the improviser is situated; on the other, authenticity regarding the improviser's own individuality. With regard to educational issues, the multivariety of required artistic skills in the improviser arguably calls for a rich learning ecology framework including collective, experiential, and exploratory approaches to improvisation. From a sociological point of view, the storytelling metaphor is shown to function as a kind of exclusionist counterdiscourse employed by an older generation of musicians against a younger one, by an autodidactic musical culture against an educationalist one, or by advocates of authenticity against technical proficiency. In conclusion, the concept storytelling as a rich intermedial metaphor is shown to be significant to the practice and reflection of performing artists through its ability to mediate holistic views of what is considered to be of crucial importance in artistic practice, analysis, and education. Storytelling in jazz improvisation: Implications of a rich intermedial metaphor

Valuation studies addresses how values are made in valuation practices. A next —or rather previous—question becomes: what then makes valuation practices? Two oppositional replies are starting to dominate how that question can be answered: a more materially oriented focus on devices of valuation and a more sociologically inclined focus on ineffable valuation cultures. The debate between proponents of both approaches may easily turn into the kind of leapfrog debates that have dominated many previous discussions on whether culture or materiality would play a decisive role in driving history. This paper explores a less repetitive reply. It does so by analyzing the puzzling case of the demise of solidarity as a core value within the recent Dutch health care system of regulated competition. While “solidarity among the insured” was both a strong cultural value within the Dutch welfare-based health system, and a value that was built into market devices by health economists, within a fairly short time “fairness” became of lesser importance than “competition”. This makes us call for a more historical, relational, and dynamic understanding of the role of economists, market devices, and of culture in valuation studies.

Ineffable Cultures or Material Devices: What Valuation Studies can Learn from the Disappearance of Ensured Solidarity in a Health Care Market

This paper examines the application by emergency managers in rural areas of forecasts of El Nino and other seasonal climate events to (1) improve the understanding of how diffuse networks can help overcome the obstacles to the use of complex scientific information and (2) to widen the use of seasonal forecasts to improve flood management. The investigation draws on ethnographic techniques of observation and conversation with emergency management networks in the state of Oregon, interviews of nearly 50 emergency managers in the state, and two detailed case studies of Oregon counties that have used seasonal climate forecasts to improve flood management. Emergency managers are more likely to use climate information tied to a time-specific and place-specific forecast and to feasible actions, and when the emergency managers are part of robust professional networks that include scientific professionals as well as end-users of forecast information.

peuple” dans les discours de legitimation de l’UE et des institutions communautaires, des annees 1950 a nos jours. Il rend compte du passage d’une premiere
sequence, ou le consensus permissif de l’opinion publique a l’egard de l’integration europeenne est tenu pour acquis, tout en insistant de plus en plus sur
la necessite d’agir sur cette opinion publique et de la faconner, a une deuxieme
sequence, suite a un tournant important a partir du milieu des annees 1970 et
surtout des annees 1980, durant laquelle toutes les revendications relatives a la
legitimite communautaire se fondent sur les attentes des citoyens. Le chapitre
suivant dans l’histoire des discours sur l’opinion publique a ete marque par une
politisation et une polarisation croissante et incontestable de cette opinion
publique. Cette tendance est apparue flagrante dans le contexte des diverses
crises – constitutionnelle, de l’Euro, des refugies, et plus recemment du Brexit – qui
traversent l’UE meme si elle commencait a etre visible des le traite de Maastricht
et le traite constitutionnel. Desormais, l’equilibre discursif penche irrevocablement en faveur des discours reconnaissant la nature profondement politique
des enjeux de la politique de l’UE, plutot que de ceux visant a les depolitiser.
Le defi consiste alors a developper des mecanismes permettant de canaliser
et de concilier des preferences, des interets et des identites contradictoires,
en reconnaissant ces differences, sans pour autant pretendre les harmoniser.
