Postdivorce parental roles: a descriptive study

John Warren was a busy general practitioner when he took the time to write the following letter to the father of a boy who had been burned in a household accident, while the father was away in Philadelphia: 
Boston, January 26, 1792 As I know it often happens that when any little accident takes place in a man’s family whilst he is absent, it is inadvertently communicated to him with exaggerated circumstances, and as I happened to be the physician … who was first sent for on the occasion, I thought it not improper to relieve you from the anxiety … by informing you of the facts myself.

Your little boy Sam was so much burnt yesterday as to require some medical assistance, and as he had it as soon after the accident as possible, Mrs. Templeman—who was at first considerable alarmed—was soon made more composed by an assurance that it was not so bad as was at first apprehended and I and have the satisfaction of informing you that he is exceedingly comfortable, and … that the most promising appearances now exist.

The manner in which he met with the accident was by catching his clothes on fire, which were instantly in a blaze … and had it not been for the remarkable presence of mind possessed by his amiable mother … he must inevitably have perished. She immediately took the most effectual method for extinguishing the fire which could possibly have been used: by smothering it with her clothes; and he happily escaped with his face slightly scorched without any injury to his eyes, a burn upon the upper part of his breast, and one of no great consequence upon each arm.

Mrs. Templeman had at the moment of the accident’s taking place just stepped out of the chamber door to speak to a servant, and before she could turn herself the child was ablaze. This instance is proof how ineffectual are the utmost care, vigilance and attention for preventing misfortunes of this kind …

I am exceedingly happy, particularly on Mrs. Templeman’s account, for so anxious was she yesterday that if appearances had not been more favorable than she imagined, there would have been danger of her being sick; but she is quite calm today and unless a fever should set in, or some unexpected symptom should occur, I can conceive of no danger in the child’s situation.1

The apparent rise in the number of breakdowns in marriage in Ireland is causing concern. Little or no research has been undertaken to enquire into causes of breakdown peculiar to Ireland. The existing literature is used here to formulate some hypotheses for the study of engagement and marriage in Ireland. The difficulties of choosing a random sample are discussed and one method of obtaining a sample is tested but found to be impractical. his paper aims at formulating some hypotheses, based on the literature, JL for a future major study of engagement and marriage in Ireland. It is also aimed at testing methods of choosing a sample, since one of the main difficulties in undertaking a study of this nature is that no list or register exists from which a representative sample can be drawn. A small sample of engaged couples was drawn to test the feasibility of a particular method of sampling. The work is, therefore, exploratory and preliminary. Before considering the literature or sampling, it is useful to discuss the frame­ work in which a study of this nature is set. There is a deepening concern in the Republic of Ireland, in both Church and state circles, about the apparent rise in rates of marital disharmony. Evidence for this rise is taken to be the increasing number of separations, both formal and informal, and of applica­ tions for Roman Catholic Church annulments. Although this is not an entirely
