TLDR
In this paper, several tasks have been used to measure subjects' discrimination ability (i.e., their ability to distinguish between two slightly different product formulations) for purposes of product testing.Abstract:

A theoretical note on difference tests: models, paradoxes and cognitive strategies
TL;DR: In this article, a simple non-mathematical introduction to Thurstonian modeling and its application to difference testing is given, along with the effects of the cognitive strategy adopted by the judge during testing.
Journal ArticleDOI
Power and sensitivity of the same‐different test: comparison with triangle and duo‐trio methods
TL;DR: In this article, the same-different, duo-trio and triangle discrimination methods were compared using vanilla flavored yogurt with and without added sugar as the medium, and two experiments were performed, one in controlled laboratory conditions and the other in conditions approximating more to consumer testing.
Journal ArticleDOI
Mustard discrimination by same–different and triangle tests: aspects of irritation, memory and τ criteria
TL;DR: In this article, the utility of the same-different protocol when studying very fatiguing products (Dijon style mustard), as well as when inspecting consumers' abilities to discriminate among food products, was confirmed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sensory difference tests: thurstonian and ssa predictions for vanilla flavored yogurts
Benoît Rousseau,Michael O'Mahony +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the Thurstonian prediction that judges will get a higher proportion of correct 3-AFC tests than triangle tests was confirmed using a yogurt system and the d' values for the triangle and 3-ACF tests corresponded.
Journal ArticleDOI
Investigating more powerful discrimination tests with consumers: effects of memory and response bias
TL;DR: In this article, the influence of memory in the duo-trio method was studied and three versions of the method with different memory requirements were considered, and the dual-pair test was predicted to increase the value of the same-different test by eliminating the large response bias variations between consumers.

Statistical Theories of Mental Test Scores
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a survey of test theory models and their application in the field of mental test analysis. But the focus of the survey is on test-score theories and models, and not the practical applications and limitations of each model studied.

An Empirical Bayes Approach to Statistics
TL;DR: In this paper, a random variable with a priori distribution function is considered, and a probability distribution depending in a known way on an unknown real parameter A, where A is assumed to have discrete values.

Variety Seeking Behavior: An Interdisciplinary Review
TL;DR: A taxonomy of varied behavior is offered to structure research findings pertaining to the various phenomena termed "variety seeking" as discussed by the authors, and a model encompassing current research is proposed and its parameters scrutinized.

Formula scoring and number-right scoring1
TL;DR: The assumption that examinees either know the answer to a test item or else choose among all alternative responses at random is often made in discussions of formula scoring as mentioned in this paper, which is indefensible.
