TLDR
It is suggested that a substantial amount of dietary squalene is absorbed and converted to cholesterol in humans, but thisSqualene-induced increase in synthesis is not associated with consistent increases of serum cholesterol levels.

Chemopreventive effect of squalene on colon cancer.

TL;DR: The finding that Squalene significantly suppresses colonic ACF formation and crypt multiplicity strengthens the hypothesis that squalene possesses chemopreventive activity against colon carcinogenesis.

Active components and clinical applications of olive oil

TL;DR: The olive tree, Olea europaea, is native to the Mediterranean basin and parts of Asia Minor, and the fruit and compression-extracted oil have a wide range of therapeutic and culinary applications.
Journal ArticleDOI

Squalene: potential chemopreventive agent.

TL;DR: Although animal studies have enhanced the understanding of the possible action of squalene in decreasing carcinogenesis, one must apply caution in extrapolating the information obtained in animal studies to humans, because of possible species differences.

Squalene, Olive Oil, and Cancer Risk: Review and Hypothesis

TL;DR: In this paper, a mechanism was proposed for the tumor-inhibitory activity of squalene based on its known strong inhibitory activity in vivo, thus reducing farnesyl pyrophosphate availability for prenylation of the ras oncogene.
Journal Article

Squalene and its potential clinical uses.

TL;DR: The primary therapeutic use of squalene currently is as an adjunctive therapy in a variety of cancers, and although epidemiological, experimental and animal evidence suggests anti-cancer properties, no human trials have been conducted to verify the role this nutrient might have in cancer therapy regimens.

The diet and 15-year death rate in the seven countries study.

TL;DR: In 15 cohorts of the Seven Countries Study, comprising 11,579 men aged 40-59 years and "healthy" at entry, 2,288 died in 15 years, with all-cause and coronary heart disease death rates were low in cohorts with olive oil as the main fat.

Serum plant sterols and cholesterol precursors reflect cholesterol absorption and synthesis in volunteers of a randomly selected male population

TL;DR: The serum non-cholesterol sterols are significant indicators of cholesterol absorption and synthesis even under basal conditions and, since gas liquid chromatographic determination of these sterols is quite simple, their measurement may be valuable for monitoring cholesterol metabolism in large-scale epidemiologic studies.

Cholesterol metabolism during ketoconazole treatment in man.

TL;DR: It appears that ketoconazole inhibits cholesterol elimination as bile acids by blocking 14 alpha-demethylation, which results in effective drainage of sterol nucleus as lanosterols into bile and feces, which is associated with a marked reduction in low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol level probably through activation of hepatic LDL apoB receptors.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cholesterol absorption: regulation of cholesterol synthesis and elimination and within-population variations of serum cholesterol levels.

TL;DR: Cholesterol absorption efficiency and absorbed dietary cholesterol significantly regulate cholesterol synthesis and elimination and are important determinants of within-population variation in the serum levels of total, LDL, and HDL cholesterol.
