A system for managing power consumption in a personal computer. To date most techniques for managing power consumption in personal computers have been for the purpose of extending battery life of portable computers whose usual source of power is a battery. By providing techniques for managing power consumption in desktop computers as well, whose usual source of power is a 120 volt, 60 Hz. wall connection, substantial savings in electric power consumption are possible due to the large number of computers which are left on for extended periods of time, even when not being actively used.
