Control of the transmission of streaming data between a first data processing system and a second data processing system in a packet network is provided. Priorities are assigned to packets of the streaming data based on characteristics of the packets of streaming data. Performance of transmission of the packets from the first data processing system to the second data processing system is monitored and retransmission of selected ones of the packets from the first data processing system to the second data processing system is terminated based on the assigned priority of the selected ones of the packets and the monitored performance of transmission. The streaming data may be progressively encoded.
