Study of characteristic specification on mixed mode fracture toughness of asphalt mixtures

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of asphalt characteristic on its mixed mode I/II low temperature fracture toughness is investigated experimentally, where a large number of edge cracked semi circular bend specimens subjected to asymmetric three-point bend loading were tested for different hot mix asphalt mixtures made of various compositions.

Application of an average strain energy density criterion to obtain the mixed mode fracture load of granite rock tested with the cracked asymmetric four-point bend specimens

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a complete set of experimental results on fracture of pre-cracked granite samples under various inplane loading mixities, and predict the fracture loads of the tested rock samples under mixed mode I/II conditions using an energy-based criterion, namely the Average Strain Energy Density (ASED) criterion.

Determination of mode III fracture toughness for different materials using a new designed test configuration

TL;DR: In this article, the Edge Notched Disc Bend (ENDB) is proposed for experimental determination of KIIIc, which is a circular disc containing an edge crack created along the disc diameter which is subjected to three-point bend loading.

EMTSN criterion for evaluating mixed mode I/II crack propagation in rock materials

TL;DR: In this paper, the results of mixed-mode fracture test data in semi-circular and triangular shape specimens and subjected to three point bend loading (i.e., SCB and ECT specimens) were used to study the brittle fracture in two marble rocks.
Journal ArticleDOI

A novel test specimen for investigating the mixed mode I+III fracture toughness of hot mix asphalt composites – Experimental and theoretical study

TL;DR: In this article, the Edge Notched Disc Bend (ENDB) is used for fracture testing of asphalt composites under mixed mode I/III deformation, which is a disc containing an edge crack created through one side of specimen along the diameter and is loaded by a threepoint bend fixture.

Using Semi Circular Bending Test to Evaluate Low Temperature Fracture Resistance for Asphalt Concrete

TL;DR: In this paper, a repeatable semi circular bending (SCB) fracture test was presented to evaluate the low temperature fracture resistance of asphalt mixture, which represented a combination of factors such as binder type, binder modifier, aggregate type, and air voids, and two testing conditions of loading rate and initial notch length.

Wide range data for crack tip parameters in two disc-type specimens under mixed mode loading

TL;DR: In this paper, the finite element method is used to analyze two disc-type specimens: a semi-circular disc specimen containing an edge crack and subjected to three-point-bend loading (SCB specimen), and a centrally cracked circular disc subjected to diametral compressive loading, often called the Brazilian disc specimen The crack parameters KI, KII and T are calculated for different mode mixities from pure mode I to pure mode II.

Semi-circular bending test; simple but useful?

TL;DR: In this article, the possibilities of the semi-circular bending test are investigated and it is shown that this test is a simple tool to obtain information on the modulus and the tensile characteristics of asphalt mixtures.

Cracked asphalt pavement under traffic loading – A 3D finite element analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, an asphalt pavement containing a transverse top-down crack is investigated under traffic loading using 3D finite element analysis, and the stress intensity factors and the T-stress are calculated for different distances between the crack and the vehicle wheels.

The fracture process zone in asphalt mixture at low temperature

TL;DR: In this paper, the size of the fracture process zone (FPZ) was estimated by locating micro-cracks that correspond to 95% AE energy before peak load in the vicinity of the initial crack tip.
