Environmental control of the cell cycle in Drosophila: nutrition activates mitotic and endoreplicative cells by distinct mechanisms

TL;DR: A fundamental difference in the control of cell cycle activation and maintenance in these two cell types is demonstrated, and the existence of a novel mitogen generated by the larval fat body in response to nutrition is implied.

Vitellogenesis and Oocyte Growth in Nonmammalian Vertebrates

TL;DR: The chicken egg acquires about 99% of its size during the 6 days before laying (Romanoff and Romanoff, 1949), when approximately 1 g protein is accumulated per day (Cutting and Roth, 1973).
Journal ArticleDOI

A 13 bp palindrome is a functional estrogen responsive element and interacts specifically with estrogen receptor

TL;DR: This work has defined the 13 bp palindrome GGTCACAGTGACC as a minimal functional estrogen responsive element (ERE), which binds estrogen receptor preferentially in vitro and point mutations within the ERE decrease its affinity for the estrogen receptor and result in a complete loss of estrogen inducibility.
Book ChapterDOI

Endocrine Control of Oocyte Maturation

TL;DR: The time period between the resumption of meiosis and the second meiotic metaphase has been referred to as the period of oocyte maturation (meiotic maturation) and is a prerequisite for successful fertilization.
Journal ArticleDOI

Disturbed Development of the Preimplantation Embryo in the Insulin-Dependent Diabetic BB/E Rat

TL;DR: This study shows that spontaneous autoimmune IDDM in the Bio Breeding/Edinburgh (BB/E) rat is associated with severe disturbance in the development of the preimplantation embryo in a majority of pregnancies, as indicated by a fivefold increase in the incidence of degenerate fragmented embryos and a 33% reduction in the number of expanded blastocysts.
