TLDR
In this article, the temperature-dependent zone-boundary surface phonons across the c(2 x 2)..-->..1 x 1 reconstruction phase transition of the clean W(001) surface were studied.
Abstract
We study the temperature-dependent zone-boundary surface phonons across the c(2 x 2)..-->..1 x 1 reconstruction phase transition of the clean W(001) surface. Velocity-velocity correlations and hence the phonon spectral densities are calculated by molecular dynamics for the surface atoms of a finite-thickness (001) slab, with interatomic potentials established in a previous study of the surface statics. Our calculated k = ((1/2, 1) / 2 )(2..pi../a) surface phonon spectra are dominated by three main low-frequency modes. Of these, the longitudinal and the shear horizontal modes are reconstruction related and display critical broadening and softening at the phase transition, while the third, the shear vertical mode, is basically unaffected. The reconstruction phase mode, the shear horizontal, appears to be responsible for the phase fluctuations which destroy long-range order at the transition.

Direct observation of a surface charge density wave

TL;DR: In this article, a reversible, temperature-induced surface charge density wave (CDW) localized at the lead-coated surface of a germanium crystal was observed and characterized, and the formation of this new phase is accompanied by significant periodic valence-charge redistribution, a pronounced lattice distortion and a metal-nonmetal transition.

Helium-atom-scattering study of the structure and phonon dynamics of the W(001) surface between 200 and 1900 K.

TL;DR: High-resolution helium-atom-scattering measurements of angular distributions and time-of-flight spectra are reported for W(001) in the temperature range from 200 to 1900 K, showing a reconstruction related superstructure peak whose angular position and intensity are temperature dependent.

Charge-density waves on metal surfaces

TL;DR: In this paper, the Peierls-type charge-density-wave (CDW) transition on metal surfaces is reviewed based on the theoretical and experimental works on such transitions in bulk quasi-low-dimensional materials, two prototypical examples are presented.
