Mortality among clients of a state-wide opioid pharmacotherapy program over 20 years: risk factors and lives saved.
TLDR
Mortality among treatment-seeking opioid-dependent persons is dynamic across time, patient and treatment variables, and despite periods of elevated risk, this large-scale provision of pharmacotherapy is estimated to have resulted in significant reductions in mortality.About:

Journal ArticleDOI
Buprenorphine maintenance versus placebo or methadone maintenance for opioid dependence
TL;DR: Buprenorphine maintenance compared to placebo and to methadone maintenance in the management of opioid dependence, including its ability to retain people in treatment, suppress illicit drug use, reduce criminal activity, and mortality is evaluated.

Mortality risk during and after opioid substitution treatment: systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies
Luis Sordo,Luis Sordo,Gregorio Barrio,María J. Bravo,B. Iciar Indave,Louisa Degenhardt,Louisa Degenhardt,Lucas Wiessing,Marica Ferri,Roberto Pastor-Barriuso +9 more
TL;DR: Retention in methadone and buprenorphine treatment is associated with substantial reductions in the risk for all cause and overdose mortality in people dependent on opioids.
Journal ArticleDOI
Epidemiology and natural history of HCV infection
TL;DR: Differences in past HCV incidence and current HCV prevalence, together with the generally protracted nature of HCV disease progression, has led to considerable diversity in the burden of advanced liver disease in different countries.

Mortality among regular or dependent users of heroin and other opioids: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies
Louisa Degenhardt,Chiara Bucello,Bradley Mathers,Christina Briegleb,Hammad Ali,Matthew Hickman,Jennifer McLaren +6 more
TL;DR: Mortality among opioid-dependent users varies across countries and populations; treatment is clearly protective against mortality even in non-randomized observational studies; study characteristics predict mortality levels.

Meta-analysis of drug-related deaths soon after release from prison.
Elizabeth L. C. Merrall,Azar Kariminia,Ingrid A. Binswanger,Ingrid A. Binswanger,Michael Hobbs,Michael Farrell,John Marsden,Sharon J. Hutchinson,Sheila M. Bird +8 more
TL;DR: There is an increased risk of drug-related death during the first 2 weeks after release from prison and that the risk remains elevated up to at least the fourth week, a meta-analysis confirms.

Pharmacological interventions for somatoform disorders in adults.
Maria Kleinstäuber,Michael Witthöft,Andrés Steffanowski,Harm W.J. van Marwijk,Wolfgang Hiller,Michael J. Lambert +5 more
TL;DR: A systematic review and meta-analysis of placebo-controlled studies examined the efficacy and tolerability of different types of antidepressants, the combination of an antidepressant and an antipsychotic, antipsychotics alone, or natural products in adults with somatoform disorders in adults to improve optimal treatment decisions.

Interventions for latent autoimmune diabetes (LADA) in adults.
TL;DR: Two studies show SU leading to earlier insulin dependence and a meta-analysis of four studies with considerable heterogeneity showed poorer metabolic control if SU is prescribed for patients with LADA compared to insulin.

Comparative quantification of health risks : global and regional burden of disease attributable to selected major risk factors
TL;DR: This book provides a comprehensive assessment of the scientific evidence on prevalence and hazards, and the resulting health effects, of a range of exposures that are known to be hazardous to human health, including childhood and maternal undernutrition, nutritional and physiological risk factors for adult health, addictive substances, sexual and reproductive health, and risks in the physical environments of households and communities.

Methadone maintenance therapy versus no opioid replacement therapy for opioid dependence
TL;DR: Methadone is an effective maintenance therapy intervention for the treatment of heroin dependence as it retains patients in treatment and decreases heroin use better than treatments that do not utilise opioid replacement therapy, and does not show a statistically significant superior effect on criminal activity.
