Multi‐product maritime inventory routing with optional cargoes : An application to outbound automotive logistics

TLDR
An optimization model to address the tactical level maritime logistics planning for Roll-on/Roll-off ships to minimize supply-chain cost and also maximize additional revenue through optional cargoes using same fleet of ships is developed.
Abstract
Purpose – The ocean transportation of automobiles is carried out by specialized Roll‐on/Roll‐off ships, which are designed to carry a large number of automobiles at a time. Many of these shipping companies have vertically integrated or collaborated with other logistics services providers to offer integrated maritime logistics solution to car manufacturers. The purpose of this study is to develop an optimization model to address the tactical level maritime logistics planning for such a company.Design/methodology/approach – The problem is formulated as a mixed integer linear program and we propose an iterative combined Ant colony and linear programming‐based solution technique for the same.Findings – This paper can integrate the maritime transportation planning of internally managed cargoes with the inventory management at the loading and discharging ports to minimize supply‐chain cost and also maximize additional revenue through optional cargoes using same fleet of ships.Research limitations/implications –...

Maritime fleet deployment in ro-ro shipping under inventory constraints

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a new model for a fleet deployment problem in liner shipping that considers inventory constraints at ports for vendor managed cargo in each route and determines optimal shipment sizes for those cargoes, between corresponding origin and destination ports.

A Cliometric Approach to Market Structure and Market Conduct in the Car Carrier Industry

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the market of seaborne motor vehicle transportation over the last three decades from 1985 to 2016, using a cliometric approach, and the theoretical market conduct was estimated by a simultaneous equation model, which included a demand function for seaborene vehicle trades, and a market conduct function of the shipping operators including an implicit cost or productivity function of car carrier fleet employed.

On model building

Abstract: Models are central to scientific thinking and essential to many kinds of practical problem-solving. Imbued with different meanings in different contexts, the word model implies structure and relationships among variables and also conveys tentativeness and incompleteness. Building models for science differs from building models for problem solving because the goals expand from strict scientific fidelity to include organizational and societal utility and so lead to more customized, complicated and artful models. Building models is a creative process in which understanding a problem and its context expands and deepens iteratively, as the model builder tries to reduce the gap between the model representation and the object being described. Ethical dilemmas easily arise in the interaction among the model builder, the model builder's client and those further persons or organizations with whom the model builder's client may interact. The situation is exacerbated by different cultures, cognitive styles and organizational responsibilities. Among possible ameliorative measures are attention to the management of expectations, advance specification of model evaluation criteria, incessant education and communication, and open access to the model itself.
