Navigating the mix-space : theoretical and practical level-balancing technique in multitrack music mixtures
Alex Wilson,Bruno Fazenda +1 more
TLDR
In this paper, a method of transformation from a gain-space to a mix-space using a novel representation of the individual track gains is introduced, and an experiment is conducted in order to obtain time-series data of mix engineers exploration of this space as they adjust levels within a multitrack session to create their desired mixture.Citations

Towards a better understanding of mix engineering
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an analysis and evaluation of real-life mixes, demonstrating that it is a viable and even necessary approach to learn more about how mixes are created and perceived.
An evolutionary computation approach to intelligent music production informed by experimentally gathered domain knowledge
AD Wilson,BM Fazenda +1 more
TL;DR: A novel methodology for intelligent music production has been developed using evolutionary computation, allowing the user to rate mixes and guide the system towards their ideal mix.

Evaluation and modelling of perceived audio quality in popular music, towards intelligent music production
TL;DR: To create mixes which maximised perceived quality, a novel semi-automatic mixing system was developed using evolutionary computation, wherein a population of mixes, generated in the mix-space, is guided by the subjective evaluations of the listener.
Investigating Music Production using a Semantically Powered Digital Audio Workstation in the Browser
Nicholas Jillings,Ryan Stables +1 more
TL;DR: It is shown that participants often exhibit commonalities in mixing styles when applying gain and panning to specific instruments in a mix, and common temporal characteristics relating to the magnitude of parameter adjustments.

Automatic gain and fader control for live mixing
TL;DR: A cross-adaptive mixing device has been developed for the purpose of optimizing the gain levels of a live audio mixture by optimizing the ratios between the loudness of each individual input channel and the overall loudness contained in a stereo mix.
Intelligent Audio Production Strategies Informed by Best Practices
TL;DR: The main focus of this article is to explore and investigate the fundamental constraints that should be at the basis of algorithm development in intelligent audio production systems through mix analysis and grounded theory strategies, and argue that a more thorough exploration on what the premises are is essential for more effective mapping and design strategies in intelligentaudio production tools.
