This article discusses, in general, the feminine participation in the economically acti-ve population, by groups of countries according to the stage of industrialization, and, in particular, the work situation of the woman in Brazil.

In face of the challenge to build knowledge on the psychological aspects of gender entrepreneurship in Brazil, this study aims to analyze the worries of entrepreneurial women worries and their subjective well-being. Forty-nine women owning business in various areas of activity in Rio de Janeiro were interviewed at their companies. A self-evaluation measure showed that entrepreneurial women shared an overall high level of quality of life, based mainly on their satisfaction at work, with children and with self-respect. Data indicated that multiple roles played by entrepreneurs are equally relevant. Qualitative analysis of the interviews revealed that those women are fearless and self-confident, though they have worries related to the company financial aspects and growth. Self-satisfied, passionately identified with their firms, they perceive themselves in an achievement continuous process. Problems related to discrimination and to multiple role-playing, as well as all other data are discussed in the light of the literature on gender entrepreneurship.

Feminist geography in Latin America has developed primarily in Brazil and Argentina We first situate research in relation to feminist movements in society which were shaped by working class activism and affected by local and global political and economic currents We then examine the implications of recent institutionalized feminisms for academia In both countries, we identify the inclusion of gender perspectives in geography as modest and relatively recent reflecting the discipline’s orientations to positivist and Marxist perspectives Such feminist work as exists is more empirical than theoretical In Brazil, early work centered in Sao Paulo and emphasized aspects of women’s productive work with some research on health issues In Argentina it has been more dispersed institutionally and topically, with attention to urban space-time themes, environment, migration, and political participation Special journal issues have been published and meeting sessions organized, but the field remains to become institutionalized in curricula and professional organizations Yet we conclude the field is making slow but sustained progress

La geografia del genero en America Latina ha comenzado a desarrollarse en Brasil y Argentina a partir de los movimientos feministas que surgieron en ambas sociedades. Estos movimientos fueron marcados por el activismo de la clase obrera, que se vio afectada por las corrientes politicas y economicas, tanto a nivel local como general. En estos dos paises, hemos identificado la inclusion de la perspectiva de genero en geografia de manera incipiente y relativamente reciente, y ello se ve reflejado en las distintas corrientes de pensamiento de la disciplina hacia las perspectivas positivistas y marxistas. Los trabajos actuales de la geografia feminista son mas empiricos que teoricos. En Brasil, los trabajos pioneros se han concentrado en San Pablo y senalan los aspectos del trabajo productivo de las mujeres con investigaciones sobre cuestiones de salud. En Argentina, los trabajos se han dado en ambitos mas diversificados y no de manera institucionalizada, aunque en los ultimos anos se le ha dado una atencion particular a las cuestiones urbanas surgidas de la relacion entre espacio y tiempo, al medio ambiente, a las inmigraciones y a la participacion politica. Tambien se han editado numeros especiales de revistas cientificas sobre la tematica y se han organizado sesiones de geografia del genero dentro de jornadas y congresos academicos, pero todavia es necesario que este enfoque sea institucionalizado en programas de estudio y en organizaciones profesionales. En sintesis, cabe destacarse que la geografia del genero ha hecho progresos lentos pero sostenidos.

Estudios de geografía del género en América Latina: un estado de la cuestión a partir de los casos de Brasil y Argentina

This article aims to discuss female entrepreneurship from a critical perspective, supported by feminist theories based on the relationship between work and social practices. The objective is to understand how female entrepreneurial action can lead to female emancipation. The complexity of the study relies on the chosen research object, which is the entrepreneurial initiatives of woman that work with craft activities. Through a case study, we explore the causes and consequences of the actions of the entrepreneurs organized in the Lace-Makers Association of Morros da Mariana, that produces bilro lace in the city of Ilha Grande, Piaui, through the standpoint of power relations and gender. The research finding points out the link between lace-maker´s artisanal activities and the reinforcement of traditional gender roles. As a conclusion, we acknowledged that even if production and the sales of lace may be a source of incomes for the group of woman drown together in the Association, the entrepreneurial activity based on craft is not an emancipator act that can subvert the unequal power distribution between man and woman in society. Following this conclusion, we recommend that further studies should take as research object the female entrepreneurial activity based on traditional craftwork.
