TLDR
The authors argued that Newton's Second Law (f = ma) is not a testable, provable proposition with a truth value, but a way of looking and a method of analysis and that the necessity of its adoption by any individual lies in its being a necessary condition of entry into the scientific community.Abstract:
The paper examines the differences between Kuhn's account, in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, of the sciences as necessarily communal activities with internally set standards of procedure and achievement, and that view of the sciences which calls itself ‘Scientific Realism’ and regards them as striving toward, and perhaps asymptotically approaching, some external and objective reality that bestows truth or falsity on scientific theories. The main argument turns on Poincare's demonstration that Newton's Second Law (f = ma) is not a testable, provable proposition with a truth value, but something that is simply adopted. It is adopted in the light of experience, certainly, but there is no logical necessity in the adoption. My suggestion is that it is a ‘way of looking’ and ‘a method of analysis’ and that the necessity of its adoption by any individual lies in its being a necessary condition of entry into the scientific community. That community itself adopts ways of looking or methods of an...read more

The Politics of Talk Coming to Terms with the ‘New’ Scientific Governance
TL;DR: The authors argue that the current approach can more accurately be portrayed as an uneasy blend of "old" and "new" assumptions, and explore the social construction of public talk, the relationship between talk and trust, the search for the "innocent" citizen, and the pursuit of social consensus.

Logics of interdisciplinarity
TL;DR: In this paper, an eighteen-month empirical study of three interdisciplinary fields that cross the boundaries between the natural sciences or engineering, on the one hand, and the social sciences or arts on the other, is presented.

Using Specific Language to Describe Risk and Probability

TL;DR: There is a problem with the IPCC strategy, however, in that it uses words differently from the way lay readers of the assessment typically do, leading readers to under-estimate the probability of high-magnitude possible outcomes.

Outside the Pipeline: Reimagining Science Education for Nonscientists
TL;DR: Research on public engagement with science is synthesized to develop a research-based plan for cultivating competent outsiders: nonscientists who can access and make sense of science relevant to their lives.

TL;DR: In this paper, a graphite-epoxy composite plate strain detection possibility by the fiber-optic acoustic emission sensor mounted on its surface was presented, which consisted in additional low-frequency phase-generated carrier implementation in the impulse Fabry-Perot interferometer and its amplitude evaluation.

The Function of General Laws in History
TL;DR: In this paper it is shown that general laws have quite analogous functions in history and in the natural sciences, that they form an indispensable instrument of historical research, and that they even constitute the common basis of various procedures which are often considered as characteristic of the social sciences.
