TLDR
In this paper, the effect of access to transportation networks on regional economic outcomes in China over a twenty-period of rapid income growth was investigated, and it was shown that proximity to a transportation network has a moderate positive causal effect on per capita GDP levels across sectors, but no effect on overall GDP growth.
Abstract
This paper estimates the effect of access to transportation networks on regional economic outcomes in China over a twenty-period of rapid income growth. It addresses the problem of the endogenous placement of networks by exploiting the fact that these networks tend to connect historical cities. Our results show that proximity to transportation networks have a moderate positive causal effect on per capita GDP levels across sectors, but no effect on per capita GDP growth. We provide a simple theoretical framework with empirically testable predictions to interpret our results. We argue that our results are consistent with factor mobility playing an important role in determining the economic benefits of infrastructure development.

Can white elephants kill? Unintended consequences of infrastructure development in Peru

Abstract: Public infrastructure development is prone to inefficiencies that can result in poor-quality implementation, but the consequences are unclear. This paper studies the effect on infant and under-five mortality of a nation-wide expansion of sewerage infrastructure, conducted by the Government of Peru between 2005 and 2015. I use novel administrative panel data at the district level and exploit random geography-driven variation in project allocation to instrument for sewerage diffusion. I document an increase in under-five mortality in districts that experienced greater sewerage diffusion. The result is linked to hazards from the construction works and was exacerbated by delays and mid-construction abandonment. The potential health benefits of sewerage fail to manifest even after completion of projects due to lack of household connectivity. JEL codes: C36, H51, I15, J18, N36, O18

Essays on misallocation of production inputs and energy efficiency in Indian industries

Gregor Singer
TL;DR: In this paper, the causes and consequences of resource misallocation and energy efficiency in Indian manufacturing are explored in the context of firm heterogeneity in the cast-iron sector, focusing on differences in access to suppliers through the transportation network.

Convergence and Equality of Road Infrastructure: A Cross Country Analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the modes of growth and convergence of GDP per kilometer of road length across the 30 selected countries for the period of 1990-2011 by means of γ convergence and also try to estimate the cross country inequalities using Gini Coefficients.

Spatial productivity and efficiency spillovers in the presence of transient and persistent efficiency: Evidence from China’s provinces

TL;DR: In this paper, the spatial productivity and efficiency spillovers of Chinese provinces using a spatial Durbin production frontier model that accounts for persistent and transient efficiency was examined using a spatio-temporal model.

Some Tests of Specification for Panel Data: Monte Carlo Evidence and an Application to Employment Equations.

TL;DR: In this article, the generalized method of moments (GMM) estimator optimally exploits all the linear moment restrictions that follow from the assumption of no serial correlation in the errors, in an equation which contains individual effects, lagged dependent variables and no strictly exogenous variables.

Estimating vector autoregressions with panel data

TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider estimation and testing of vector autoregressio n coefficients in panel data, and apply the techniques to analyze the dynamic relationships between wages an d hours worked in two samples of American males.

Biases in dynamic models with fixed effects

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined bias in dynamic models with fixed effects where both the number of time series observations and cross-sectional replications are small, and the formula bias estimate was in line with that in published Monte Carlo studies.

Micro-Foundations of Urban Agglomeration Economies

Capitalism with Chinese Characteristics: Entrepreneurship and the State

TL;DR: The authors presents a story of two Chinas, an entrepreneurial rural China and a state-controlled urban China, and uses the emerging Indian miracle to debunk the widespread notion that democracy is automatically anti-growth.
