Peer-to-peer file sharing system and method using user datagram protocol

TLDR
In this article, a file-sharing system over a wide-area network is described. But the file sharing is not limited to a single file, but instead includes a plurality of files, each of which is stored on a different host.
Abstract
A network-based file-sharing system includes a first host computer and a plurality of other host computers, each host computer having a processing unit and a storage. The first host computer is programmed to generate from the plurality of other host computers a list of other host computers where a user-selected file is stored. The first host computer is further programmed to select a second host computer from the list of other host computers based on an indication of a transfer time from the second host computer to the first host computer and to retrieve at least a portion of the particular file from the second host computer using User Datagram Protocol data packets. Files may be shared over a wide-area network by connecting a plurality of hosts over the wide-area network; coupling a registry server independent of the hosts to the wide-area network for maintaining a registry containing, for each of a plurality of files, a message digest uniquely identifying the file and an indication of restriction status of the file; and providing a first host having a processing unit, a storage, and a first set of machine instructions storable in the storage and executable by the processing unit for retrieving a user-selected file from at least one of the hosts coupled to the first host via the wide-area network. Access to the file by the first host from the plurality of hosts is based on the indication in the registry of restriction status of the user-selected file.

File system shell

TL;DR: The file system shell as discussed by the authors provides virtual folders which expose regular files and folders to users in different views based on their metadata instead of the actual physical underlying file system structure on the disk.

System and method for filtering and organizing items based on common elements

TL;DR: In this article, a system and method for filtering and organizing items from computer memories based on common elements is presented, which exposes regular files and folders to users in different views based on their metadata instead of the actual physical file system structure on the disk.

Centralized selection of peers as media data sources in a dispersed peer network

TL;DR: In this article, a hierarchical content distribution system includes a seeding server, a plurality of geographically distributed content platforms, and a distribution controller, all interconnected by a communications network, where each content platform includes a content file server responsive on-demand to requests for the transfer of content files.

Rich drag drop user interface

TL;DR: In this paper, preview information is provided to the user during a drag operation of a selected object onto a target object, indicating what type(s) of action is to be taken should the selected object be dropped onto the target object.

System and methods of streamlining media files from a dispersed peer network to maintain quality of service

TL;DR: In this article, discrete portions of a content file are multiply distributed to and persisted in a distributed set of content stores existing within the storage network such that various content stores persist subsets of the content file portions.

System for uniquely and persistently identifying, managing, and tracking digital objects

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present methods of managing digital objects in a network, where holders of rights in digital objects are enabled to control terns and conditions under which they are accessed by users, or are granted to others.

Methods and systems for implementing a real-time, distributed, hierarchical database using a proxiable protocol

TL;DR: In this article, a real-time distributed, hierarchical database uses a proxiable protocol, where a first proxy server performs a first database lookup based on information contained in the first message.

Secure user-level tunnels on the internet

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for network multiplexing and tunneling includes opening a single Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) connection between at least two endpoints in the network, establishing a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) over the opened TCP connection, and mutually authenticating each of the endpoints of the SSL TCP connection.
