Abstract
The purpose of the labyrinth weir is to increase the discharge per unit width of channel beyond that usually obtained from a conventional weir under identical head conditions. This is achieved by compressing a large length of crest in concertina form into the space available on site. An increase of discharge ranging up to sixfold or more can be obtained. Described are the results of a program of research on labyrinth weirs that is aimed to provide comprehensive performance and design data. The experimental work covered the effects of all primary parameters affecting performance such as crest length magnification, plan geometry, number of cycles, etc. Parallel with the experimental work a mathematical model was constructed and a computer program developed which will predict performance to ± 4% accuracy or better over a wide range of operating conditions. Finally a simple design method is instilled from the experimental and theoretical results.

Experimental Studies on Flow over Labyrinth Weir

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated various characteristics of a flow-over labyrinth weir by co-design curves with different shapes and configurations and found that the existing spillway is overcoming its earlier limitations of unusual shape and other complicated flow patterns.

From Labyrinth to Piano Key Weirs – A historical review

TL;DR: The recently introduced Piano Key Weirs (PKWeirs) as discussed by the authors have been proposed to increase the flood releasing capacity at existing concrete gravity dams by increasing the capacity of the free crest spillway.

Experimental Study on Flow over In-Reservoir Arced Labyrinth Weirs

TL;DR: In this paper, the flow characteristics of arced labyrinth weirs have been investigated and the parameters affecting the flow capacity are discussed, including the effects of the headwater ratio, the sidewall angle, and the weir arc angle on discharge coefficient and the efficiency.

Efficient method using Whale Optimization Algorithm for reliability-based design optimization of labyrinth spillway

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a novel framework for the probabilistic design of labyrinth spillway structures using a new developed reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) approach.
