TLDR
The kinetics of Pi transport are consistent with previous observations that there is a direct exchange betweenOH− and Pi, but not between OH− and malate, and the equilibrium distribution of H2PO4− and OH− deviates from the Donnan distribution.

Insulin, ketone bodies, and mitochondrial energy transduction.

TL;DR: The moderate ketosis characteristic of prolonged fasting or type II diabetes appears to be an elegant compensation for the defects in mitochondrial energy transduction associated with acute insulin deficiency or mitochondrial senescence.

Determination of the mitochondrial protonmotive force in isolated hepatocytes.

TL;DR: The intracellular distribution of lipophilic ions and weak acids and bases was studied in intact hepatocytes as indicators of gradients of pH and membrane potential and a total mitochondrial protonmotive force in the intact cell in excess of -200 mV was obtained.
Journal ArticleDOI

Phosphate transport in rat liver mitochondria. Kinetics and energy requirements.

TL;DR: Measurements of phosphate uptake, along with determinations of intramitochondrial volumes, show that the phosphate transport system catalyzes transport of phosphate against a concentration gradient at 0°, consistent with the hypothesis that concentrative uptake of phosphate can be driven by the pH gradient of the mitochondrial membrane.
