Plasma ferritin levels as an index of iron deficiency in women using intrauterine devices.

TLDR
The findings indicate the need to monitor iron status and administer oral iron replacement therapy in subjects with an intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) and that haemoglobin, mean corpuscular haenoglobin andmean corpuscular volume measurements declined progressively, but were less sensitive predictors of iron deficiency.

Iron Biology in Immune Function, Muscle Metabolism and Neuronal Functioning

John L. Beard
- 01 Feb 2001 -
TL;DR: It is hoped that this review of the more basic aspects of the biology of iron will set the stage for subsequent in-depth reviews of the relationship of iron to morbidity, mortality and functioning of iron-deficient individuals and populations.

Iron Metabolism: a Comprehensive Review

TL;DR: Despite its abundance in the earth's crust, iron deficiency is a serious health issue in many parts of the world and the molecular mechanisms involved in iron metabolism are just now being defined.

Screening for iron deficiency: an analysis based on bone-marrow examinations and serum ferritin determinations in a population sample of women.

TL;DR: Efficacy of different methods in screening for iron deficiency was re‐examined in a randomly selected sample of 38‐year‐old women with known iron status based on absence/presence of stainable iron in bone‐marrow smears.

Plasma ferritin determination as a diagnostic tool

TL;DR: It is then necessary to establish the parenchymal nature of the iron overload by showing an elevated transferrin saturation and, if elevated, the more definitive liver biopsy should be done.

Iron biology in immune function, muscle metabolism and neuronal functioning. Discussion

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on the biological processes that are the basis for alterations in the immune system, neural systems, and energy metabolism and exercise and the strength of evidence in each of the domains and the large gaps in knowledge of basic biology or iron-dependent processes are identified.

Serum ferritin concentration and iron stores in normal subjects

TL;DR: The relationship between serum ferritin concentration and the amount of storage iron has been studied in normal subjects and a high degree of correlation was demonstrated, and the possible advantages of assessing iron stores by using the serum ferrite concentration are discussed.

An immunoradiometric assay for ferritin in the serum of normal subjects and patients with iron deficiency and iron overload

TL;DR: An immunoradiometric assay for human ferritin has been developed and it is thought that the serum Ferritin concentration may reflect the iron stores of the body.

Menstrual blood-loss with intrauterine devices

TL;DR: The amount of loss, the percentage of women losing more than 80 ml, the decline in haemoglobin concentration, and the incidence of anaemia during the 12 cycles following insertion were all greater among users of the Lippes Loop than of the Copper 7 with generally intermediate values for Dalkon Shield users.
