Surface science and the silver-catalyzed epoxidation of ethylene: an industrial perspective

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of surface science studies relating to the silver-catalyzed epoxidation of ethylene is reviewed from the perspective of industrial catalyst development, and the influence of alkali and halide promoter species via electronic and geometric effects is discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Construction of a reaction coordinate and a microkinetic model for ethylene epoxidation on silver from DFT calculations and surface science experiments

TL;DR: In this article, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been used to investigate a possible reaction coordinate for the epoxidation of ethylene on silver, and a simple microkinetic model is used to estimate parameters needed for the formulation of a rate law.
Journal ArticleDOI

Bridging the structure gap: Chemistry of nanostructured surfaces at well-defined defects

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors summarize the knowledge achieved so far for the gas-surface interaction in presence of well-defined defects and for simple reactions at such sites, and show that the most promising approach to this topic is the use of single crystal surfaces cut along high Miller index planes, i.e. stepping surfaces showing a high density of one majority low coordination site which mimics a defect.

Overview of Selective Oxidation of Ethylene to Ethylene Oxide by Ag Catalysts

TL;DR: In this article, the key fundamental issues about this important catalytic system are still unresolved, and the authors propose a new approach to solve them, which is based on the work of the authors of this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

An investigation on the role of Re as a promoter in AgCsRe/α-Al2O3 high-selectivity, ethylene epoxidation catalysts

TL;DR: In this article, a series of Cs Ag, Re Ag, Cs Re Ag and Re Mo Ag (supported on α-Al 2 O 3 ) catalysts has been evaluated for ethylene epoxidation to determine the mechanism of selectivity enhancement for high-selectivity EO catalysts which contain high-valent Re oxyanions and other copromoters, such as MoO 4 2−.

A single crystal study of the silver-catalysed selective oxidation and total oxidation of ethylene

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the performance of both partial and total oxidization of Ag(111) single crystal surface at pressures of up to 50 Torr, and showed that H-transfer rather than C-C cleavage is rate-determining in the combustion of both ethylene and ethylene oxide.

The interactions of O2, CO and CO2 with Ag(110)

TL;DR: In this article, the interactions and reactions of O2, CO and CO2 with Ag(110) have been studied with AES, XPS, TDS and LEED.

Cs-promoted Ag(111): model studies of selective ethylene oxidation catalysts

TL;DR: The role of cesium promoters in silver catalysts for the selective epoxidation of ethylene (C/sub 2/H/sub 4/ + 1/2 O/sub 3/ ) has been studied by using adsorbed Cesium on the surface of clean Ag(111) as a model catalyst as mentioned in this paper, which is performed in an apparatus that allows rapid transfer of the catalyst between an ultrahigh vacuum chamber for surface analysis (XPS, AES, LEED, TDS) and a high-pressure microreactor for kinetic measurements.

Ethylene oxide isomerisation on single-crystal Ag(111) in atomically clean and Cs-moderated conditions

TL;DR: In this article, the rate of isomerization of ethylene oxide to acetaldehyde has been investigated over a single crystal Ag(111) surface between 300 and 500 K and at pressures of up to 2 Torr.
