TLDR
The results point to a strong radiation protection effect of the heme groups and a dependence of radical yield of hemoproteins on the electronic structure of theheme.

Damage to hemoglobin by radiation-generated serum albumin radicals.

TL;DR: Analysis of the effects of the interaction of radiation generated human serum albumin radicals (HSA*) with human hemoglobin molecules (Hb) indicated that in the experimental systems studied, the HSA* radical reactions with Hb molecules are favoured over recombination reactions of HSA*, and one can suggest that Hb plays the role of an acceptor of radical energy located on HSA.

Radiation effects in glycoproteins and related carbohydrates

TL;DR: In this paper, the possible influence of prosthetic groups on the radiation effects in glycoproteins, the radical yield of a group of such molecules and related carbohydrates was determined by the ESR technique.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effects of iron upon the radiation damage in non-heme iron proteins

TL;DR: Despite the high quantity of iron contained in ferritin and the direct linkage of two iron ions to the transferrin molecule, no difference between the radiation effects in native and iron-free proteins was observed.

Effects of Metal Ions on the γ-Radiolysis of Polycrystalline Djenkolic Acid

Shiro Kominami, +1 more
- 01 May 1974 -
TL;DR: The second-order decay may be explained by a vacancy-controlled bulk-diffusion process; metal ions appear to exert their influence by increasing the number of lattice defects as discussed by the authors.
