Abstract
This review identifies antecedent manipulation and the role of establishing operations as primary themes of the book as well as crucial elements in the design of a broadly applicable behavior support technology. The discussion of the book's thematic treatment of these elements highlights the traditional importance of elaborate antecedent interactions within the field of behavior analysis and welcomes researchers' efforts to broaden their credibility and influence through comprehensive and durable applications of behavior support technologies in a variety of natural settings. The reviewers rate the book as representative of the most recent developments and directions within applied behavior support.

A Conceptual Examination of Setting Events

TL;DR: The authors examines a range of conceptualisations of setting events and appraises the extent to which they can be viewed as a discrete class of phenomena, and a number of plausible explanations exist to account for setting events associated with both conditioned and unconditioned reinforcers.

The Influence of Idiosyncratic Antecedent Variables on Problem Behavior Displayed by a Person with PDD

Abstract: This study describes an assessment of the influence of idiosyncratic antecedent variables on the problem behavior of a 9-year-old boy with pervasive developmental disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The results of these analyses suggested that the boy displayed problem behavior during situations in which demands were provided and idiosyncratic variables were present. The efficacy of a treatment package consisting of a visual cue and differential reinforcement to treat the boy’s problem behaviors is described. Finally, the importance of assessing the influence of antecedent variables on the problem behavior of persons with developmental disabilities and limitations of the current research are discussed.

Distinguishing between discriminative and motivational functions of stimuli.

TL;DR: Here the stimulus change functions more like an establishing operation than a discriminative stimulus, and the new term, "establishing stimulus," is suggested.

The Matching Law: A Research Review

TL;DR: A summary of the previous 30 years' of research on the way in which animals and humans distribute their behaviour between alternative sources of reinforcement is given in this paper, where the authors make use of the empirical results available, something only partially present in many theories of the time.

Functional assessment, curricular revision, and severe behavior problems.

TL;DR: An adolescent female with multiple handicaps and a long history of severely disruptive behavior participated in a functional assessment linked directly to specific revisions in her school curriculum, demonstrating that the curricular revisions were effective in eliminating severely disruptivebehavior and increasing on-task responding.

The role of attention in the treatment of attention-maintained self-injurious behavior: noncontingent reinforcement and differential reinforcement of other behavior.

TL;DR: There was evidence that NCR attenuated several of the limitations of DRO, and this is particularly interesting in light of the long experimental history of NCR as a control rather than as a therapeutic procedure.

Positive Behavior Support for People with Developmental Disabilities: A Research Synthesis

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a review of the published literature on positive behavior interventions and use this database to provide four main content areas for research: demographics, assessment practices, intervention strategies, and outcomes.
