Topography measurements and applications in ballistics and tool mark identifications.
TL;DR: Several analytical methods for assessing similarities and differences among pairs of surfaces and a few examples of research results to identify cartridge cases originating from the same firearm or tool marks produced by the same tool are provided.
Journal ArticleDOI
Forensic comparison and matching of fingerprints: using quantitative image measures for estimating error rates through understanding and predicting difficulty.
Philip J. Kellman,Jennifer L. Mnookin,Gennady Erlikhman,Patrick Garrigan,Tandra Ghose,Everett Mettler,David Charlton,Itiel E. Dror +7 more
TL;DR: The results indicate the plausibility of using objective image metrics to predict expert performance and subjective assessment of difficulty in fingerprint comparisons and develop a number of quantitative measures of image characteristics and multiple regression techniques to discover objective predictors of error as well as perceived difficulty and confidence.
Consistency and Variability Among Latent Print Examiners as Revealed by Eye Tracking Methodologies
TL;DR: In this paper, the eye positions of 18 expert latent print examiners and 18 novice participants across two separate experiments that were designed to represent abbreviated latent print examinations were recorded and the similarity of eye fixation patterns was computed for each group.
Journal ArticleDOI
Forensic science, an enabler or dis-enabler for criminal investigation?
TL;DR: This article offers some thoughts for the forensic profession but also challenges the justice system community to develop a more collegiate approach to the use of forensic science to improve its efficiency in supporting the criminal justice system.
Journal ArticleDOI
The power of contextual effects in forensic anthropology: a study of biasability in the visual interpretations of trauma analysis on skeletal remains
TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of external manipulations on judgments and decision-making in visual trauma assessment were examined by analyzing the effect of contextual information to bias assessments in forensic sciences.
