The important role of cleansing agents applied to the skin in the causation of industrial dermatitis has been stressed by a number of writers. It is worthy of emphasis that trade dermatitis is caused annually in an enormous number of cases not by the substances encountered at work but by the removal of these substances with methods harmful to the skin. 1 Soap and water constituted a contributory factor in the production of eruptions in at least 249 of Downing's 2 series of 2,000 cases of cutaneous disease arising in industry. Horner 3 remarked that he had observed more cases in which dermatitis was due to the improper use of cleansing agents than cases in which the dermatitis was due to contact in the occupation. It was stated in the precursor of this book1: “If a single value independent of the apparatus and method used could be established for the foaminess of a liquid (at specified temperature and other external parameters), then this chapter would have consisted of tables such as are given in more fortunate books for surface tension, viscosity, and analogous physical quantities. Compilation of such tables for foaminess is impossible in the present state of our knowledge, and the values presented below may claim validity only for the particular instrument and the particular procedure employed.”
