The Advanced Daimler-Benz Driving Simulator

A review of the current use of multibody dynamics methods in the analysis of the dynamics of vehicles is given. Railway vehicle dynamics as well as road vehicle dynamics are considered, where for the latter the dynamics of cars and trucks and the dynamics of single-track vehicles, in particular motorcycles and bicycles, are reviewed. Commonalities and differences are shown, and open questions and challenges are given as directions for further research in this field.

State-of-the-art and challenges of railway and road vehicle dynamics with multibody dynamics approaches

Driving simulators are frequently used for vehicle system development, human factor study, and vehicle safety research by enabling the reproduction of the actual driving environments in a safe and tightly controlled environment. Recent development of powerful desktop computer workstations can now support the computational requirement of small to medium-scale driving simulators. The driving simulator for this research is developed using PC-based workstations that are capable of producing high fidelity graphics at reasonable cost. The VR-based simulator gives a driver on board the impression that he drives an actual vehicle by predicting vehicle motion caused by the driver input and feeding back the corresponding visual, motion, audio and proprioceptive cues to the driver. This research is intended to provide a test bed for simulating driving related task using virtual reality technology.

A PC-based driving simulator using virtual reality technology

The emergence of high-speed computers, new mechanical system dynamic simulation formulations, and a broad range of operator-in-the-loop simulators is shown to provide a revolutionary new virtual prototyping tool to support Concurrent Engineering of mechanical systems. The state-of-the-art of operator-in-the-loop simulation and projections regarding its refinement for use in a broad range of engineering applications is outlined, with emphasis on providing a virtual prototyping capability that accounts for the operator-machine interaction, prior to fabrication and test of prototypes. Examples of advanced ground vehicle simulators, telerobotic simulators, and construction equipment simulators are used to illustrate virtual prototyping applications that hold the potential to revolutionize the process of mechanical system design for the human operator. The potential now exists to routinely investigate trade-offs involving mechanical system design and operator effectiveness that will permit the engineering community to optimize the design of mechanical systems for the human operator, beginning early in the design and development process and continuing through commercialization and product improvement. Bringing the human factor into design consideration using virtual prototyping before design decisions are finalized is projected to be one of the greatest advances in Concurrent Engineering of Mechanical Systems to occur in the decade.

Virtual Prototyping for Mechanical System Concurrent Engineering

Driving instructors and novice drivers often remain sceptical about the realistic learning potential driving simulators offer to real world driving tasks. The aim of this experiment was to compare the effectiveness of training in the real system with an advanced driving simulator. The participants were required to learn a specific driving manoeuvre: reverse park a truck with an attached trailer from one side of the street to the other. 50 experienced truck drivers were recruited to participate in the experiment. Initially all participants performed the manoeuvre 3 times in the real system (i.e. in the truck). If a participant completed the task successfully they were credited with a score of ‘1’, if a participant was unable to complete the task successfully he was credited with a score of ‘0’. The time taken to complete the task was also recorded. The participants were then divided into two groups. The two groups proceeded to train the task in one of the two training environments: Group A practised 5 times in the advanced driving simulator, whilst group B practised 5 times in the real system. Once training had been completed, all participants were asked to perform the manoeuvre an additional 3 times in the real system. Successful completion of the task was scored and the time taken to complete the task was once again recorded. The difference in scores between the initial 3 performances and the final 3 performances in the real system were measured allowing a direct comparison between the effectiveness of training in the two learning environments to be made. Whilst the t-test analysis of results indicated no significant difference in the success of completing the task between training groups, an insignificant difference in the time taken to perform the task between the training groups was found. It is suggested by the authors that the reason for this difference was due to the highly sensitive nature of the simulator that taught participants to be more cautious than necessary when performing the manoeuvre. Overall the results indicated a positive transfer of training from the driving simulator into the real system in this specific driving task.
