Abstract: In this paper, a review of past and recent developments in the dynamics of flexible multibody systems is presented. The objective is to review some of the basic approaches used in the computer aided kinematic and dynamic analysis of flexible mechanical systems, and to identify future directions in this research area. Among the formulations reviewed in this paper are the floating frame of reference formulation, the finite element incremental methods, large rotation vector formulations, the finite segment method, and the linear theory of elastodynamics. Linearization of the flexible multibody equations that results from the use of the incremental finite element formulations is discussed. Because of space limitations, it is impossible to list all the contributions made in this important area. The reader, however, can find more references by consulting the list of articles and books cited at the end of the paper. Furthermore, the numerical procedures used for solving the differential and algebraic equations of flexible multibody systems are not discussed in this paper since these procedures are similar to the techniques used in rigid body dynamics. More details about these numerical procedures as well as the roots and perspectives of multibody system dynamics are discussed in a companion review by Schiehlen [79]. Future research areas in flexible multibody dynamics are identified as establishing the relationship between different formulations, contact and impact dynamics, control-structure interaction, use of modal identification and experimental methods in flexible multibody simulations, application of flexible multibody techniques to computer graphics, numerical issues, and large deformation problem. Establishing the relationship between different flexible multibody formulations is an important issue since there is a need to clearly define the assumptions and approximations underlying each formulation. This will allow us to establish guidelines and criteria that define the limitations of each approach used in flexible multibody dynamics. This task can now be accomplished by using the “absolute nodal coordinate formulation” which was recently introduced for the large deformation analysis of flexible multibody systems.

Abstract: The paper reviews the roots, the state-of-the-art and perspectives of multibody system dynamics. Some historical remarks show that multibody system dynamics is based on classical mechanics and its engineering applications ranging from mechanisms, gyroscopes, satellites and robots to biomechanics. The state-of-the-art in rigid multibody systems is presented with reference to textbooks and proceedings. Multibody system dynamics is characterized by algorithms or formalisms, respectively, ready for computer implementation. As a result simulation and animation are most important. The state-of-the-art in flexible multibody systems is considered in a companion review by Shabana.

Abstract: A general and comprehensive analysis on the continuous contact force models for soft materials in multibody dynamics is presented throughout this work. The force models are developed based on the foundation of the Hertz law together with a hysteresis damping parameter that accounts for the energy dissipation during the contact process. In a simple way, these contact force models are based on the analysis and development of three main issues: (i) the dissipated energy associated with the coefficient of restitution that includes the balance of kinetic energy and the conservation of the linear momentum between the initial and final instant of contact; (ii) the stored elastic energy, representing part of initial kinetic energy, which is evaluated as the work done by the contact force developed during the contact process; (iii) the dissipated energy due to internal damping, which is evaluated by modeling the contact process as a single degree-of- freedom system to obtain a hysteresis damping factor. This factor takes into account the geometrical and material properties, as well as the kinematic characteristics of the contacting bodies. This approach has the great merit that can be used for contact problems involving materials with low or moderate values of coefficient of restitution and, therefore, accommodate high amount of energy dissipation. In addition, the resulting contact force model is suitable to be included into the equations of motion of a multibody system and contributes to their stable numerical resolution. A demonstrative example of application is used to provide the results that support the analysis and discussion of procedures and methodologies described in this work.

Abstract: A variant of the generalized-α scheme is proposed for constrained mechanical systems represented by index-3 DAEs. Based on the analogy with linear multistep methods, an elegant convergence analysis is developed for this algorithm. Second-order convergence is demonstrated both for the generalized coordinates and the Lagrange multipliers, and those theoretical results are illustrated by numerical tests.

Abstract: Starting from an existing advanced motorcycle dynamics model, which allows simulation of reasonably general motions and stability, modal and response computations for small perturbations from any trim condition, improvements are described. These concern (a) tyre/road contact geometry, (b) tyre shear force and moment descriptions, as functions of load, slip and camber, (c) tyre relax- ation properties, (d) a new analytic treatment of the monoshock rear suspension mechanism with sample results, (e) parameter values describing a contemporary high performance machine and rider, (f) steady-state equilibrium and power checking and (g) steering control. In particular, the "Magic Formula" motorcycle tyre model is utilised and complete sets of parameter values for contemporary tyres are derived by identification methods. The new model is used for steady turning, stability, design parameter sensitivity and response to road forcing calculations. The results show the predictions of the model to be in general agreement with observations of motorcycle behaviour from the field and they suggest that frame flexibility remains an important design and analysis area, despite improvements in frame designs over recent years. Motorcycle rider parameters have significant influences on the behaviour, with results consistent with a commonly held view, that lightweight riders are more likely to suffer oscillation problems than heavyweight ones.
