The effect of surface tension on the waves produced by a disturbance on the surface of a running stream

The two-dimensional initial-value problem of water waves generated on a sloping beach by a moving oscillatory surface pressure is solved. Integral representation of the surface displacement is obtained with the help of a generalized Fourier transformation, which is evaluated asymptotically for large values of time and distance. It is found that in the ultimate steady state there exists two or four waves depending upon whether a critical ratio is greater or less than unity, while it remains singular when the critical ratio is equal to unity.



In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird das zweidimensionale Anfangswertproblem fur Wasserwellen gelost, die an einer abschussigen Kuste dadurch erzeugt werden, das auf die freie Oberflache eine Druckwelle wirkt. Eine Integraldarstellung der Verruckung der Oberflache erhalt man, indem man eine verallgemeinerte Fourier-Transformation verwendet und fur grose Zeit- und Entfernungswerte asymptotisch auswertet. Es zeigt sich, das es in dem sich schlieslich einstellenden stationaren Zustand zwei oder vier Wellen gibt, je nachdem, ob ein kritischer Wert groser oder kleiner als eins ist, und das er singular bleibt, wenn dieser Wert gleich eins ist.
