A multivariate technique for estimating new zealand temperature normals

A feild study of “southerly” changes on the east coast of New Zealand will be conducted in January 1988. Previous related work is reviewed. The experiment may reveal similarities with east coast southerly busters in Australia although the New Zealand mountains are higher and the coast is not continental. An outline of the supplementary observing program is given.

The New Zealand Southerly Change Experiment

. Some results of recent research into mesoscale phenomena and climate are reviewed –notably sea breezes, cyclonic eddies, dry lake circulations, urban climates and topoclimates –with particular reference to New Zealand. Extension of this work into modelling and prediction of climate change is likely, and the case for a more integrated geography –one which could fruitfully address questions relating to environmental inputs and societal adjustments which are currently neglected by physical geography –is made.
