The results of a national survey of 51 social work doctoral program directors indicate that, although the majority of doctoral programs include preparation for teaching as a program objective, they offer limited formal course work and few opportunities for supervised teaching experiences. The authors discuss the results of this survey and make recommendations for better preparing social work doctoral students for their roles as teachers.

Preparing Social Work Doctoral Students for Teaching: Report of a Survey

Little is known about which qualities MIS department search committees are looking for in candidates when conducting a faculty search at the assistant professor level. This paper examines the qualities being sought by institutions focusing on research, teaching, or both. The actual teaching and research performance of students in the field is then used to find clusters of students and to examine the performance of different clusters. Finally, lessons for students and academic programs are discussed in terms of fit of the faculty candidate and the academic department.

Profiles of MIS doctoral candidates: ideals and reality

The development of integrated learning systems (ILSs) holds great promise for enhancing the instructional process and for improving student learning. This article describes an application of an ILS that takes into account learning theory research, principles of instructional design, and other factors related to human learning. The application presented utilizes IBM's “Advanced Technology Classroom” to verify the efficacy of integrated learning systems from both a student-user perspective and the perspective of instructors in a university setting.

Chair: Dr. Stephen Butler Since its formal introduction in the 1990s, online (aka distance) learning has grown significantly in both popularity and scope. The proposed benefits o f online learning are well documented in the literature and the quality o f education provided is arguably the same, and in some cases potentially better, as that o f traditional classroom instruction. Even so, some fields of study do not offer online degree programs at all or only at the bachelor’s and master’s level. The purpose o f this study was to develop the first online doctoral program (Doctor o f Education (EdD)) in Applied Exercise Science for accreditation and implementation at the United States Sports Academy (USSA). The paper starts with a comprehensive comparison between traditional classroom and fully online instruction. This is followed by a brief review o f the EdD in Sports Management program currently employed at USSA. Next, the paper provides an extensive review o f some of the different resident and online master’s and doctoral programs (Doctor o f Philosophy (PhD)) in Exercise Science/Physiology currently offered at four traditional ‘brick and mortar’ universities and three online universities. Finally, the paper introduces a proposed EdD program in Applied Exercise Science that was developed after an extensive review o f file literature and traditional Exercise Science/Physiology doctoral programs already in existence. The primary purpose behind this study was to develop a sound program of study that could be completed completely online and at the convenience o f the students, but at the same time, adequately prepare them for the rigors o f academia and research in the field o f Exercise Science.

Development of an Online Doctor of Education Program in Applied Exercise Science

Doctoral programs aim at preparing students for stewardship in their discipline with particular emphasis on training for research. While doctoral programs have been conventionally offered by research institutions, market demands, changing needs, and other factors are driving traditionally teaching institutions to explore opportunities for implementing information systems (IS) doctoral programs. In this paper we present some of the issues and challenges involved in designing and implementing IS doctoral programs. The emphasis is on traditionally teaching institutions. The paper concludes with a set of recommendations and directions for future research on doctoral programs in information systems.
