Natural Background Level Analysis of Heavy Metal Concentration in Korean Coastal Sediments

TL;DR: In this article, a large archive dataset of heavy metal concentration (Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn) for more than 900 surface sediment samples from various Korean coastal environments was newly compiled.
Book ChapterDOI

Spatial Extent of Sediment Toxicity in U.S. Estuaries and Marine Bays

TL;DR: In this article, the toxicity of 1543 surficial sediment samples collected during 1991 through 1997 throughout 25 estuaries and marine bays was determined with 10-day amphi-pod survival tests performed with solid-phase (bulk) sediments.
Journal ArticleDOI

The deep benthos of Prince William Sound, Alaska, 16 months after the Exxon Valdez oil spill

TL;DR: In this article, an assessment of the benthic macrofauna and associated environmental parameters at 40 and 100 m was made, and the results confirmed the conclusions of studies of intertidal and shallow subtidal regions following the Exxon Valdez oil spill that demonstrated disturbance effects decreasing with depth.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ecology, statistics, and the art of misdiagnosis: The need for a paradigm shift

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors approach ecological data analysis from a different vantage point and have implications for ecological risk assessment, despite all the advances in theoretical ecology over the past four decades.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sediment quality thresholds: Estimates from hockey stick regression of liver lesion prevalence in english sole (Pleuronectes vetulus)

TL;DR: Using a two-segment hockey stick regression, statistically significant chemical thresholds of biological effects were estimated for hepatic lesion prevalences in English sole (Pleuronectes vetulus, formerly Parophrys vetulus) in relation to sediment concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons as mentioned in this paper.

Mercury Hazards to Fish, Wildlife, and Invertebrates: A Synoptic Review

Ronald Eisler
TL;DR: A review of the available literature on the ecological and toxicological aspects of mercury (Hg) in the environment, with special reference to fish and wildlife resources, is reviewed and summarized in this paper.

Selenium Hazards to Fish, Wildlife, and Invertebrates: A Synoptic Review

Ronald Eisler
TL;DR: A review of the environmental and toxicological aspects of selenium in the environment is presented in this paper, including its chemistry, background residues in biological and other materials, and toxic, sub-lethal, and latent effects (including the effects of Se deficiency).
Journal ArticleDOI

Current approaches to developing sediment quality criteria

TL;DR: It is concluded that, for chemical-by-chemical criteria, the equilibrium partitioning method shows promise; for criteria that are also applicable to chemical mixtures, the apparent effects threshold/sediment quality triad approaches appear to be most appropriate.
