The sensitizing capacity of helenin and of two of its main constituents, the sesquiterpene lactones alantolactone and isoalantolactone: a comparison of epicutaneous and intradermal sensitizing methods in different strains of guinea pig.
TLDR
Only Pirbright guinea pigs showed a high sensitization rate by the open epicutaneous technique; with this method, alantolactone was the more potent sertsitizer.Abstract:
The sensitizing capacities of helenin (an extract from a Compositae Inula helenium L.), alantolactone and isoalantolactone (two isomeric sesquiterpene lactones), were assessed by sensitizing guinea pigs of different strains: albino Himalayan spotted, Pirbright and Hartley. Both alantolactone and isoalantolactone are found to be sensitizers if injected intradermally. Only Pirbright guinea pigs showed a high sensitization rate by the open epicutaneous technique; with this method, alantolactone was the more potent sertsitizer.read more

TL;DR: In this paper, the synthesis of the heterocycle and classification of the synthetic methods are not only of practical interest, but also fundamentally important as a current example for the construction of an unusual 1,4-functionality distance and an α-substituted acrylic ester moiety which is susceptible to nucleophilic attack.

Molecular Aspects in Allergic and Irritant Contact Dermatitis
TL;DR: Molecular mechanisms associated with irritant contact dermatitis are more difficult to investigate and demonstrate as they are very often based on reversible interactions with biological systems.

TL;DR: Sesquiterpene lactones derived from species of the Composltae family of plants have been reported to cause allergic eczematous contact dermatitis and the presence of a i-methylene group exocyclic to tbe y-lactone appears to be the immunochemical requisite for such dermatitis.
