No calls were rated by dispatchers as incomprehensible due to low sound quality and only 3% of the calls were considered somewhat difficult or very difficult to understand. Videoconferencing on mobile phones can be used for the initial emergency call during medical emergencies also in suboptimal conditions.
The idea proposed in the present paper can be extended to multiplicative white noise and colored noise.
The results of the survey show masking potential of grey seal communication calls at significant distance in the presence of local shipping noise where the detection distance of calls between conspecifics can be significantly reduced.
Together, the results are inconsistent with the hypothesis that dip listening improves a female gray treefrog's ability to select longer calls in modulated compared with unmodulated noise.
Simply getting someone on the line is not sufficient, because such calls would require follow-up calls.
These results emphasize the importance of categorizing calls before attempting to draw conclusions about call usage and possible effects of noise on vocal behavior.
We find that colored noise can induce synchronization, but the onset of synchronization, as characterized by the value of the critical noise amplitude above which synchronization occurs, can be different for noise of different colors.
However, this impact could be small if anurans can alter their vocalization characteristics to avoid masking of their calls by traffic noise.
First, these loud calls are easy to detect by human researchers even against high levels of background noise.
Our results suggest that long-term noise exposure affects the structure of nestling begging calls.
