Students increasingly come to college to earn degrees that will lead to employment, and most undergraduates do not perceive of the BA in Political Science as a gateway degree, but rather as a terminal degree.
Amid the concerns about students' political apathy and/or deficiencies in political literacy, the paper suggests that political science and the ARS might be natural bedfellows.
This study tests, and finds support, for the hypotheses that a student who majors in political science will have stronger feelings of political competence and will be more willing to engage in hypothetical political actions than two peer groups: (a) those who major in other fields and (b) those who show an interest in politics but have not studied it.
One would expect, therefore, that political science-a discipline that focuses specifically on the nature of power-would have a healthy respect for the role of ideas.
This increase in visible and self-conscious political dissensus extends, of course, throughout the university, but it has left a special mark on political science and the other social sciences
Thus, how a political science major is structured is posited to be related to student learning.
