With a few exceptions the estimated total dietary fiber and dietary fiber from cereals appear to be in reasonable agreement with other values obtained by a variety of methods for a number of developed countries.
When related to the role of fiber in nutrition the results obtained suggest that cereal fiber would be only slightly modified during gut transit, unlike vegetable fiber in which microbial digestion would probably result in the total destruction of the fiber cell wall matrix.
In summary, the fiber cereal appears to be a suitable short-term treatment for constipation, although its long-term efficacy requires further study.
