The surveys show significant differences between what competences agricultural employers require of graduates and the competences they acquire during their agricultural engineering degree courses.
Unemployment is a major concern affecting livelihoods all over the world; policies to enhance crop diversity and prevent the loss of associated agricultural jobs are urgently needed.
Participants felt that students prusuing a major in agricultural educaiton should have the opportunity to select between preparation for formal educaitonal settings or non-formal educaitonal jobs in agricultural industry.
Those who are further away from such centers are even less likely to be in well-paying non-farm jobs if they are living in areas with greater agricultural potential.
They provide the first comprehensive study of the history and current state of the highest degree of the agricultural economics profession, show how the degree and the journals in which dissertation research is published have changed over time, and discuss how the profession has evolved from farm economics to an agricultural and other applied economics fields.
In so doing it assumes a degree of specificity of factors used in agriculture and makes appropriate agricultural policy variables endogenous.
These results may also positively influence university-level curricula and degree programs both within and outside of agricultural communications.
