Our results indicate that most, and perhaps all, central lateral relay neurons project to both the striatum and cerebral cortex.
These results demonstrate a distinct topographical organization of organ-specific neurons of the major pelvic ganglion of the male rat, a phenomenon which has also been observed in other peripheral ganglia.
It is concluded that AH-neurons are primary sensory neurons and S-neurons are interneurons and muscle motor neurons in the circuits.
The consistent and low cell number should be helpful in elucidating the number of subsets of these neurons, the anatomical and functional organization of some of the dopaminergic neurons along the paraventricular organ, as well as factors that play a role in regulating neuron numbers.
These findings imply developing to the next higher stage requires an increase in the number of neurons a species has.
