This receiver signal can then be employed in identifying the location and the shape of metallic objects.
Our experience suggests that metal detection is a simple and accurate technique for the localization of ingested metallic objects and provides information equivalent to that from plain radiographs for the treatment of patients with suspected foreign-body ingestion.
The method is suited to cover a wide range of driving frequencies and can potentially be used for detecting non-metallic objects with low DC conductivity.
The standoff distance between the detector and metallic object will give direct influence to the performance of the proximity switch.
The performance of proposed sensor is competitive among industrial state-of-the-art proximity sensors, yet with added functionality of differentiating metallic and dielectric objects.

Although the methods presented were designed for inspection of needles, they also perform robustly in other computer vision tasks where metallic objects have to be inspected.
